- Pyrinae

Some of Pyrinae's earliest memories are of her mother, Sandbar, showing her how to dye silks. Back then, she marveled at how her mother's claws deftly handled the shimmering fabric. Always careful. Never applying too much pressure.

A pity she didn't apply the same technique to parenting.

It was always assumed Pyrinae would inherit her mother's silk business, at least by her mother. Her father, Cacao, was a proponent of letting his many children find their own way in life, and was Nae's staunchest supporter when she decided enough was enough, and that it was time to leave Bird Of Paradise and find more fertile grounds.

Or less fertile - Pyrinae's wandering quickly brought her to the edge of the Scarred Wasteland.

Now? She wanders, unsure of what her purpose in life is. She's somehow picked up a few members of her fledgling clan - Scarlet Fever, a creepy-but-benign spiral who seems to always be oozing... something; Lucia, a chatterbox oracle who seems to have decided Nae is her BFF after only knowing each other an hour; and Spice, a coatl who speaks only broken bits of her language, but claims he's seen what lies beyond the Forbidden Portal.

Despite having to worry about more than she ever had to in her birth clan, where everything was provided for her... Pyrinae feels strangely whole for the first time in her life. Content. The more dangerous life gets, the more beautiful it is by contrast, and as an artist that speaks to her.

Pyrinae’s mother, Sandbar, is the kind of domineering that’s hard to fight directly. Even when she’s in a good mood, there’s a quiet undercurrent of confidence to everything she does, an understanding that if those less intelligent would just listen to her, they’d inevitably agree with her wisdom. She is nothing if not unshakably poised.

So when Sandbar’s otherwise unassuming daughter, who dutifully wore her mother’s silks while growing up as a show of family pride (and as a tacit advertisement), decided to leave her sphere of influence, she was livid. Then came the variety of overbearing that’s easier to protest: petty shows of temper. And, honestly, to Nae… it was a relief. Petty? Maybe a little. But mostly, it was just refreshing to see her mother’s confidence shaken, to reclaim some power in their relationship. And maybe - just maybe - force some introspection on her mother’s part.

She’s not holding her breath for that one, though.

Cacao was always the parent Pyrinae could trust more. He assumed nothing, asked everything. Always wanted context. Always encouraged Nae to push, to never take things at face value, or for granted.

Pyrinae is grateful for his influence on her upbringing, but also feels guilty knowing she is the only reason her parents ever fight. Her quiet father has done his best to hide that from her, but... she still knows.

27808902.png Though Pyrinae's birth clan contained many Plague dragons that didn't conform to stereotypes, when meeting Scarlet Fever she still found herself bemused. He didn't just 'not conform'; if asked he would have literally had no clue what those stereotypes even were.

When they met, he was attempting to build a sculpture out of tree branches and bones. Because it sounded pretty.

Now, she and this strange, clumsy, oozing spiral are somehow fast friends, despite Nae's (comparatively) no-nonsense outlook and Scarlet's... general vibes. They may be something more, but Pyrinae is trying not think about that for now. What would her mother think?

(Or maybe, she thinks sometimes, she should develop a crush on him out of spite, just see what her mother does then. It's a horrible motivation, terrifyingly unethical, and highly tempting.)

Hela is a much more typical resident of the Plaguebringer's lands.

Or, rather, they are? Pyrinae has never met a dragon with more than one head before, and it's somewhat disconcerting. (The extra eyes, however, are something she's completely used to.)

One of the first dragons Pyrinae met on her search, Lucia took one look at Pyrinae and decided they were best friends for life.

Nae just rolls with it. Lucia made for nice company as she traveled through Dragonhome on her way to the Scarred Wasteland, chattering about whatever inane piece of landscape struck her fancy.
