Biography

Tsavorite is a variety of garnet, famous for its deep green color that comes from traces of chromium or vanadium. Its chemical formula is Ca3Al2Si3O12. The gem was first found in Tanzania in 1967 and attracted the attention of the gem trade, but the Tanzanian government didn't grant mining permits. The first commercially viable source was found in Kenya near the Tsavo West National Park, giving the gem its first name of tsavolite. However, gem dealers suggested that tsavorite would "come off the American tongue better" and this new name stuck. Tsavorite is often marketed as a cheaper alternative to emerald. It is a deeper green color and its crystalline structure it refracts more light. It is said that tsavorite helps people to discover beauty within themselves and others, along with staying true to oneself rather than chasing unattainable goals and destinies. |
