“Hm? What’s this?” A Guardian peered down at two small, shivering red bundles nestled tightly against the root of a tree in the Tangled Wood. He was accustomed to finding many things in his wanderings during the day--or as close as he could judge to it--but two seemingly abandoned Imperial hatchlings was not one of those. He pondered what he should do for a moment before deciding take them back with him was the best course of action. After all, who would mind two little hatchlings? He scooped them up, surprised to find they slept soundly despite the sudden movement. With a smile he carried them off with a bit of difficulty, depositing them in his nest.

“Lyra?” A small voice peeped up from the nest as Frey, the Guardian, sat outside. He turned his head slightly, trying to catch a glimpse of the apparently awakened Imperial hatchlings he’d brought in just mere hours earlier.

“I’m here, Cassiopeia.” Another equally small voice answered.

“We didn’t fall asleep here.” There was a note of panic, making her already high pitched voice even higher. Frey decided now was a good time to interrupt.

“I brought you here.” He poked his head in, doing his best to seem friendly. The two hatchlings shrieked, curling around one another and scrambling back. He looked quite crestfallen, “Oh, there’s no reason to fear, little ones! I took you here so you’d be safer. The Tangled Wood is no place for two little girls on their own.”

The two looked rather wary to believe him, but one slowly untangled herself from her sister and moved closer, “We’re in the Tangled Wood?”

“Yes, you are. If your eyes are any indication, you’re a rather long way away from home little ones. How did you get here?” Frey cocked his head to the side. The two hatchlings shared a glance before the one that still sat far away from him responded.

“We don’t remember.” She flicked her tail nervously back and forth, quick and jerky twitches of just the tip. The small bit of red fluff at the end kicked up the dust in his nest, tossing it this way and that. He supposed he didn’t mind, but if she kept that up she sure would make a mess.

“You don’t remember? Well, let’s start with something more simple then. What are your names?” They shared another glance. The one nearest him replied first.

“I’m Lyra.” She looked at her sister who still did not respond, “She’s Cassiopeia.”

“Lyra!” She whined, “Mother always said not to talk to strangers…”

“He helped us, Cass. We can trust him!”

Frey nodded emphatically, “I promise I wouldn’t harm either of you. I was just scared what with you two sleeping out there unsheltered. There are some terrible dragons in the Tangled Wood.” He looked about before laying down, resting his chin on his paws so he could keep a relatively level gaze with the two young Imperials.

“Are we to stay here?” Cassiopeia asked, uncurling a bit.

“If you wish.” Frey gestured with his tail, “I’m sure the others out there won’t mind too terribly.” Well, some of them might, but these were children! They couldn’t be so heartless as to tell him to throw them back to the shadows.

Lyra perked up, already warming up to the idea of having a place to stay for awhile while they figured out what to do, “Thank you, mister--” She paused and frowned, “Mister? You didn’t tell us your name.”

“Oh, how silly of me! My name is Frey.” He grinned, a toothy grin that wasn’t at all intimidating even though the size of his teeth would usually suggest otherwise. “You two can stay here as long as you’d like.”

Cassiopeia cast her sister a worried glance that went unnoticed by her. Frey caught it, however, and made note that it seemed she was the more timid of the pair. “Hey mister Frey? How many dragons are here with you?” It was Lyra. The little one had waddled her way closer to him and now sat, looking up at him with curious eyes. He smiled and chuckled.

“An awful lot. You’ll meet them in time, for now why don’t we get you two settled in? I’ll go get some materials to set up a place for you to sleep.” He turned to go but Lyra clung fast to his leg. Looking down he chuckled again, “Yes, little one?”

“Please don’t leave us.” There was real fear in her wide, brown eyes. Frey looked from her to Cassiopeia who hadn’t budged an inch even now.

“Do you two want to come?”

“Yes!” Lyra chirped, “Come on Cass, let’s go get bed stuff!”
“No I’ll...I’ll stay here.” She turned away with a finality Frey was used to seeing only in adults. He frowned, worried to leave her alone but decided that even if someone came sniffing around it wouldn’t be too bad. He wasn’t going far, after all.

“Alright Lyra, let’s go get your stuff, yeah?” He looked down and lumbered off, the little Imp curled tightly around his leg, going along for the ride.

“Cass, come on, it’s time to wake up!” Lyra pounced on her sleeping sister. Cassiopeia grumbled and raised her head, looking at the far too awake Lyra.

“Lyra, it’s barely even dawn.” She grumbled. Looking out of her nest she noticed the clan was already bustling. “What’s the occasion?”

“There’s new hatchlings!” Lyra squealed. Cassiopeia frowned. She wasn’t sure how her sister could be so invested in a clan that wasn’t even their own. It had been months since they’d seen home, but Cass held strongly to the notion that someone must be looking for them. Lyra, however, seemed to take right to the clan, following Frey around and quickly making a name for herself among the clan members. Granted, Cassiopeia had made one too--The recluse. She rarely budged, only leaving her nest to acquiesce to her sister’s demands.

“So? There’ve been new hatchlings a bunch of times.”

“So there’s five this time! Five! In one go!” Lyra grinned wide, “Oh come on Cass, you have to come see them. Please? Just a second, I promise.” She was already turning to leave. Cassiopeia sighed. It was easier to give in than to argue with Lyra. She raised herself and started for where Lyra had darted to. Sure enough there was a batch of hatchlings, all blinking as they looked up at the dragons surrounding them with their purple eyes. Cass felt a twang deep in her heart as she observed them. Somewhere, miles and miles away, there were other hatchlings breaking into the world, blinking up at their clan with warm, brown eyes. She swallowed hard. What she wouldn’t give to see Dragonhome again.

“Aren’t they precious, Cass?” Lyra chirped. Cassiopeia nodded in a mechanical motion.

“Yeah.” The word was hollow, quiet. She turned back to her nest, not wanting to see it any longer. She curled into her nest and sighed heavily. It wasn’t long after that Frey came wandering by.

“We okay, little star?” Even in her grown state he hadn’t dropped the nickname he gave her so long ago. With a huff Cassiopeia lifted her head to meet his inquiring gaze.

“Homesick.” In the months they’d stayed here, neither she nor Lyra could remember how they managed to end up in the Tangled Wood.
“Keep holding out, little star, you’ll find a way home eventually, I just know it.” He smiled warmly, trying his best to encourage her. She was used to the act but she couldn’t deny that it did work, even if it was just a little.

“I don’t think Lyra wants to go home, Frey.”

He looked to her, watching her as she cooed and marveled at the hatchlings just under her. With a sigh he looked back to Cassiopeia, “I dare say you may be right. She really enjoys her life here.”

“How could she forget our family so quickly? Does she not care?” The words were out before Cassiopeia could stop them. She immediately regretted it, but it was what had been gnawing at her mind ever since they got here. Lyra had adapted so quickly. It wasn’t fair.

“I don’t think she’s forgotten, little star. I think she’s doing the best she can.” Frey padded into her nest and sat next to her. “Lyra hurts too, just in a different way. She’s trying to patch herself up the best way she knows how--moving on.”

“I don’t want to move on.” The words came out pinched. Frey turned his gaze to find the Imperial slowly beginning to dissolve into tears. He placed a gentle paw on her neck.

“Cassiopeia, you and I both know Lyra will do what Lyra will. If you can’t be happy here, you may have to leave her.”

“I don’t want to leave her, Frey!” She snapped before recoiling. “I’m sorry I…”

“Don’t apologize. I know.” He patted her a few times, “You never have to apologize for hurting, Cass.”

“I want to go home, Frey.”

“I know, I know.”

Lyra smiled up at Cass, curled around her first batch of eggs. There were three, all perfect. Cassiopeia couldn’t fathom how an Earth dragon had laid a batch of Shadow eggs, but there they were. Cass smiled tightly back at her sister.

“Aren’t you excited, Cass? You’re going to be an aunt.” Lyra swept a wing over them, fixing her loving gaze on the eggs as she lightly dusted each with her tail.

“Lyra I--” Cassiopeia swallowed, “There was….I met someone.”

Lyra perked up, beaming. She didn’t understand. “Oh? Who is he? Is he handsome? What kind of dragon is he?” She gasped, “OH! Do I know him?”

Cassiopeia sighed, “No, Lyra. I met a dragon from another clan. An Earth dragon. She has powers, Lyra, powers that can tell us what happened. When she came to the Tangled Wood, she didn’t know how she got here either. We…” she hesitated, unable to find the words to continue for a few moments, “I’m going to stay with them, Lyra. You could come too, there’s room.”

“Cass, how could you ask that of me?” Lyra’s voice cracked, her expression hurt. “How could you want to leave? This is our home Cass!”

“No, Lyra.” Cassiopeia snapped before she could stop herself, her tongue always faster than her thoughts, “This is your home. It never was my home.” Lyra recoiled from her sister, shock spreading across her face. “I’m going with or without you, Lyra. Verity is going to help me get home.”

Lyra stared in disbelief for what felt like an eternity. Finally she moved, curling tighter around her eggs. Behind her, Cassiopeia saw her mate advancing, having heard everything. He took a spot next to her. Cassiopeia didn’t have to be told twice--didn’t have to be told period. She was alone.

“Lyra--”

“Just go, Cass. Go find your home. Go find your family.” Lyra spat, eyes full of pain and betrayal. Cass flinched. She’d never seen her sister this way before. Her heart pounded in her chest as she looked from her sister to her sister’s mate and back again, panic blooming in her.. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. Lyra was supposed to be happy, was supposed to be willing to go with her. Before she could lose her nerve, Cassiopeia turned and fled, tearing off for the outer edges of the Foxfire Bramble where The Court of Stone lay in wait.

She didn’t look back.

Two little Imps went wandering
Two little Imps got lost
Two little Imps caught pondering
And quickly learned the cost

Two little Imps in the forest
Scared and all alone
Tuckered out to its creepy chorus
‘Til a savior gave them a new home.

One bitter Imp went running
One bitter Imp betrayed
One bitter Imp becoming
A light beginning to fade

One bitter Imp in the bramble
Scared but not alone
For her freedom took a gamble
Instead, she found a home.
