Biography

Vostok
Male / Gay / PhD's: Astronomy, Statistics
Romantic partner: Chandra
arcane_0.png Location:
Tereshkova Launch Complex (TLC)
Job:
Astrodynamicist

Vostok was named for the Vostok programme, a Soviet manned spacecraft program which intended to put humans into low earth orbit and return them safely. It was in competition with the American Mercury program. The Vostok program was a success, as it placed both the first man (Yuri Gagarin) and the first woman (Valentina Tereshkova) into space, and returned them both alive and well.

If anything, the Vostok program set a high standard for America to beat. While the Mercury program's longest mission was 34 hours, the Vostok program's longest lasted nearly five days. In addition, the last four Vostok missions were launched in pairs, while Mercury only had single missions.

The program lasted from 1961 to 1963. It was succeeded by the Voskhod programme, which included two- and three-cosmonaut flights. The Voskhod programme was suspended by the Soyuz program, which continues today.
The old bio sucked so I'm replacing it with a summary I wrote lol
GuidanceOfficer wrote on 2017-09-29:
Vostok grew up in the Zephyr Steppes, where he was the only nocturnal dragon for miles around him. He loved the stars and astronomy, but learning about them was difficult, because he couldn't attend school while being nocturnal, so he read everything he could about space and made his own star charts during his free time (what a NERD). Eventually he worked up enough money to go to school in the Starfall Aisles to study astronomy.

He was in school for a long time, because he'd never had any formal education, and his math skills were really lacking. But he labored for YEARS (almost 15, probably) and got through with a PhD in astronomy. In grad school, he met the love of his life, Chandra, a chemist from Arcane who had grown up with astronomy forced on him and hated it with a passion. The two were in many ways polar opposites, but they both loved math (NEEEEEERDS) and learning new things, and wanted to make big differences (hopefully positive) in their fields of study.

After they graduated, Chandra got a job working at a space agency in the northern Aisles, and since Vostok was an astronomer with a huge mathematical background, he got a job there as an astrodynamicist. But a few months after they got settled, Arcane faced a huge recession, and a lot of businesses had to lay off workers. The space agency moved base completely over to Lightning, where there was grant money for the sciences and especially engineering fields. But Vostok was devastated, because living in the Aisles and studying astronomy had lowkey been his dream since he was a kid.

But tl;dr the economy in Arcane came back and they realized it was cheaper to launch crap from there anyways, so they built another launchpad there, and Vostok works there for about half the year. He probably also works at an observatory in his free time because LOL poor guy.

Some notes:
  • Chandra and Vostok being married is supposed to represent how spaceflight is a bond between human dreams of exploration and curiosity and the damn hard work it'll take us to get there. Ad astra per aspera.
  • Don't read Chandra's bio. Love yourself. It's long and convoluted and a big mess.
  • The tl;dr of why it's cheaper to launch from the Starfall Aisles is that the closer you are to the equator, the faster the surface of the planet, and therefore you, are spinning. This applies to rockets, too. So for a rocket to launch into orbit, it can actually use that energy to give it an extra kick to get into orbit. This is why in America, we launch rockets from Florida! (Okay, we launch rockets from more places than there, but you don't see us launching the Delta IV from Maine, do you?)
