If you're leveling your own dragon(s), make sure they are equipped with Rally/ Haste and pump up Quick and Vit (Vit until desired, then Quick and Strength for physical dragons or Intel for Mage) to have better chance at assisting your trainer dragon.

When the trainer dragon is dead or health bar is low and runs a risk of losing the battle, refresh the Coli page to avoid energy loss.
