There lived in the shadows a dragon of roses, removed from thorns and clean from the world.

“Don't you love the smell of roses?” calls a dragoness resting in the light. “Come closer, take a sniff. If you're worried about thorns, don't be! These flowers have no need of them.” Her flower-covered wings are stretched in trust, and her voice is calm and pleasing.

“Come now,” said a drake of the light to the blushing rose. “Follow me quietly, and you'll see. You are a ravishing beauty, a rarity who should be shining in the stage lights instead of being hidden in this darkness.” He extended a hand to the shadows, waiting for the sweet and gentle dragoness who hid inside them, staring at the bright red sleeves fitted tightly to his wrist.

“Come now,” says the stranger draped in red. “I just want to share my great bounty with as many as I can. You can have a rose, and you can share its scent with anyone you wish. It's only a moment of your time to stop and smell the roses. Enjoy what's right in front of you,” she cajoled. The intended consented, leaning in to inhale rose-scented blight as she drew a mask over her face.

But our girl is smarter than she seems. Before her stood a choice, a chance to have the world in her hands, clad in glamour and finery. She knew others who took his hand. She didn't know what was out there that enthralled them so, but she would be the first to return. She accepted his help with a sly smile, letting herself be pulled from the dark pool like a prize, and got to see all she had missed.

“What a pity,” says the dragoness dipped in blood. “This one couldn't get me in either.” The roses fill the air with their scent, wildness, and fear, dancing a waltz at a ball without invitations. She dropped the poor dragon on the wayside and continued on, plucking wilting petals and leaves as she went, the flower girl for the mistress of death.

When she tried to come back, the shadows rejected her. She was a foreign entity, touched by the outside, and impure. They forgot their daughter, and shirked their dark puddles from her feet. She raged outside, indignant and callous, arguing her case. She could see them inside and watch their bemused expressions as they treated her like a yapping dog from the safety of their shelter.

She waited for the next to come, tucking her mask behind her in the myriad of green, sniffing the roses, and enjoying their scent.

“You... You ruined me. You ruined everything when you left. You're going to pay it all back, every piece, and you're going to do it in any way you can.” The dingy drake of the light tried to grab her, but she spun away, laughing in his face like this was all a game. He fell, already weakened, hands grasping in her direction while she passed a scornful eye over him and walked away. But he wasn't quite done. The dragon of roses was already tainted, and he traded his life to corrupt her wholly. She gasped, roses bursting from her palms, the thorns puncturing her scales as she shook her hands, trying to get rid of them. “Poison you were, and poison you'll be.” He laughed until he choked on his own spit, bubbles of foam sinking into the ground.

“Mark my words.” She trailed a finger lazily on the surface of the shadow, feeling it shrink away from her, compressing itself as much as it could. “I will find a way back. I will be the one to return, and when I do,” She pressed her face against the barrier and vowed, “You will welcome me.”
