Biography

Uh-oh, looks like this forgetful Ridgeback wandered a little too far from his home lair (Volrin, #261879), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him to his home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. This is not necessary, but he would be very grateful!

Adventure Log:

Frostflake has, unfortunately, inherited his dad's especially poor memory; in fact, he can barely even remember his father's face! Everything before what he had for breakfast today is a jumbled blur, and at this point, he can't even remember why he started his adventure in the first place. Maybe, on his travels, he'll find someone who can help him with his poor memory? -Volrin

Frostflake left his home, flying aimlessly while thinking very hard about what was he doing. In fact, he thought so hard with such a focused mind, he didn't noticed the mountain right in front of him.

The blue Ridgeback woke up with a lot of pain in his snoot. Ouch! That couldn't be good for his already poor memory, he thought. Looking at his surroundings, Frostflake found out he was in some kind of hay bed in a warm cave, and already bandaged! Did someone rescue him?
Suddenly an Imperial female appeared at the entrance of the cave.

"Oh thank goodness you're okay! That was quite a number you did on your face there. I'm Artemis."

Frostflake then learned Artemis had found him, all four paws up in the air, passed out on the ground! She had then taken him to her own home, where she lived with her mate Actaeon and a few more lone dragons who ended up joining their small clan. In return, he told her his own misfortune, how the Ridgeback actually didn't know where exactly he was going, or what he was searching for. Artemis promptly asked if he was interested in staying forever, saying how dangerous it could be for a lone forgetful dragon to be traveling alone like that. Frostflake thanked Artemis for her kindness, but he knew he had to be on his own way.

The forgetful Ridgeback set out once more, wondering if he'd be able to find any answers on the path in front of him.

Not long after, he came upon a tidy clan in the shimmering lands of the Lightweaver. He met LittleBlippah the fae andher mate Reymiriath the tailor. They discussed lightly over a cup of tea, and he noticed how the faes steered clear of any political topic - when he asked them for which reason they were like that, they politely explained that such talk was considered disorderly and unnecessary, as the clan had a perfectly functioning monarchy.

Frostflake soon found himself in an uncanny territory. It seemed like a very dark and secretive but possibly magical forest. He eventually learned that it was known as the Starfall Strand. He learned this from some very dark inhabitants who identified him as a traveler. They nudged him towards the main-land, the Focal Point, where the rest of their clan resided. There, he was warmly welcomed by Sunrise, a Fire Snapper and the designated 'greeter' of the clan. She and her mate, an Ice Tundra named Barbegazi, made him feel right at home. They didn't appear to judge him for his memory loss and, if anything, they found him to be endearing.

They also encouraged him to go south, to the Southern Icefield. By his looks he'd fit in there, and maybe that was where he was going originally! Barbegazi reminisced on his birth clan and seemed so happy to remember Ice territory that it made Frostflake excited to go there! They hoped he'd find what he was looking for there, but they also reassured him that whatever he was after he'd find eventually. They also gave him a scarf to keep him warm on his journey there or wherever!

Gold Steampunk Scarf

In his journey, Frostflake came to Icefields. And as he entered the territory a sudden blizzard struck, seeming to come out of nowhere! He knee he had to find a shelter, so he found a building that looked like an abandoned laboratory and rushed there.

"Hello, stranger." he turned around and saw a steampunk-themed Tundra. "This blizzard is nasty, it could be weeks till you have weather that will allow you to fly."

She took his scarf, that was now soaked from melted snow, and gave him new clothing. She also surrounded him with candles to help him warm up further.

Day after arriving, Frostflake felt really sick. His bones ached so much, he was unable to even get up. Lachine cared for him and ended up falling in love with him. As they stayed together, they hatched four beautiful babies.

"I can't stay with you forever, I hope you understand... I can't remember what I started my adventure for, and I'm hoping if I keep going it'll jog my memory." Frostflake explained to her, probably for the fifth or sixth time.

"No worries, I can live with that. Long lasting relationships make me feel uncosy."

She kissed him and returned his old scarf to him, as well as gifted him with a pair of arctic goggles. "Here's a small gift, in case of bad weather." she said with a bittersweet smile.

It was time to move on. He left her house and never turned around, as sadness scratched at his heart.

Brushhunter's Arctic Goggles

Frostflake trudged along the sunny, winding path, the warm environment of the Sunbeam Ruins feeling strangely... familiar to him. Well, he had bright yellow eyes, so maybe this was the where he came from? As he probed his mind, trying to dredge up memories of this place, he almost stepped on an icy Tundra dressed in a heavy robe! The Ridgeback freaked out at his mistake, and began frantically dusting off the tiny dragon while apologizing profusely, but the Tundra simply chuckled in response. He peered up at the enormous dragon from under his hood, and said in a slow, soothing voice, "Hello, traveller. What brings you here?"

In response, Frostflake stepped back from the Tundra. Sitting his haunches on the ground, he explained, "My name is Frostflake, I'm... pretty sure. I just kinda ended up here; I can't remember why I started my adventure, but I hope that if I keep going to new places, I might start to regain my memories."

The Tundra cocked his head a little bit, and his slow voice gained a hint of confusion as he asked, "Well, why are you so focused on getting your memory back, anyways?"

The Ridgeback mulled that over for a moment, and then he sighed. "I don't know," he started, "I just feel like I'm forgetting something really important. I've forgotten the whole reason for me travelling in the first place, for crying out loud! How am I supposed to adventure if I can't remember why I'm adventuring?"

A tiny smile pulled up at the Tundra's face. A warm breeze drifted by, but it seemed to become chillingly cold as it blew past him. "Well, the way I see it is... if you can't remember why you're adventuring, why are you focusing so hard on those memories? Rather than worry yourself about getting your lost memories back, maybe you should just enjoy the memories you do have. You could even start to make new ones, memories so great your brain won't want to forget them!"

At the thought of this, Frostflake's face lit up. "I... I think I really like that idea," he said, grinning wildly. The hooded Tundra nodded happily, and then he stood up, turning around to leave. Frostflake stood up as well, his adventure given new purpose. "Goodbye, and thank you for the advice!" He called to the Tundra, before spreading his wings and taking off into the sky.

"Goodbye, my son." Snowdrift murmured peacefully, knowing full well the Ridgeback could not hear him.

-- they whisper truth --

home is
unreachable / untouchable / unavailable;
you'll be lost forever

Statue-_L.png
I had a dream father,
a nightmare really;
It was raining,
there was lightning flashing across the darkened sky,
but every sound was drowned out by sound of beating wings.

Even the thunder couldn't compete against it,
a harsh fluttering that only seemed to grow louder and louder--

A lone figure stood out, shining with purpose, their voice reaching me as if they were standing next to me.

"Home is lost to you boy--"

Frostflake traveled on and on for a long time. He had forgotten the tundra's features already, but somehow the words resounded in his heart- to make memories so wonderful that he wouldn't forget them.

But as he flew above ash and smoke, he could not recall one good memory. Had he not found what he was looking for?

"Well, the only thing to do is to fly forward." He declared decisively. He took a dive down from a gap in the gray clouds, his wings brushing the ashy steam behind him. It was increasingly getting warmer until Frostflake glided over a desert-or, a savannah with lava rivers, actually. He landed at the rim of one of the lava pools and watched the lava waterfall to an endlesslly deep pit below.

"This is interesting to watch, I hope I remember it." He said cheerfully.

"Why would you want to remember a crummy lava fall?" A voice rumbled behind him. Frostflake turned to the voice and looked down at a coatl half his size. He carried a variety of pouches and books strapped to his waist and chest. Flames coated his feathers, but with how hot the Ashfall Wastes already were Frostflake couldn't feel the heat.

"Well, I have never seen anything like it. Or, maybe I have, but I do not remember. I need to make good memories." Frostflake replied the last part like a mantra.

"Don't we all." The coatl scoffed, but stepped closer, eying Frostflake's tattered garb, "My name's Skyria. Come with me before someone unpleasant finds you."

"Unpleasant?" Frostflake replied, stepping towards the coatl.

"Yes, unpleasant, as in 'we're going to kick you out of the lands' unpleasant. In Fire Flight terms, you're ugly and half-dead. The folks here don't like dragons with pale colors." Skyria spoke matter-of-factly, "That could change, however. Maybe when another inner war happens and everyone finally gets killed off." There was a sneer in his tone as he looked away and spread his wings.

Frostflake nearly collapsed under all the insults. "Well... That's not very nice." He managed, but when Skyria flew off he followed.

"My name is Frostflake, by the way!" He called, a little miffed, but did Skyria really dislike him? He noticed the coatl glancing back at him to make sure he was following.

"Whatever, Frosty!" Skyria replied. He lead Frostflake to a den near the forges, which was surprisingly cool inside. Frostflake let out a large sigh of relief and collapsed on a very soft surface of feather pillows. He was more tired and hot than he realized. He felt something slip from his neck, and opened his eyes to see Skyria examining his ragged scarf.

"I'm going to make this into something better." Skyria suddenly lashed out, and cut away Frostflake's goggles as well. He held both the scarf and goggles in his tail.

"Hey! That's mine!" Frostflake protested, rearing his head

"As I said, I'll make you something better than this junk. Just take a nap."

"No! They... they were..." Where did Frostflake get them from? As he trailed off and thought hard about that, Skyria was quick to disappear further into his cave. Frostflake made an unhappy sound when he realized Skyria escaped and laid down again. The cool, comfortable feather pillows and his exhaustion quickly dragged him to sleep.

When Frostflake woke up, he found a cool, blue mantle draped over his neck and a pair of silver goggles on his hand. Skyria was asleep on a ledge above, and outside the cave it was pitch black except for the lava rivers and the occasional flames sprouting through the air.

Frostflake did not know what to think of this place, but the quiet moment seemed to fit one of those 'good memories' he was working on gathering...

The world drifted into focus once more. Without realizing it, Frostflake had fallen asleep again. He sleepily adjusted the scarf and goggles on himself so they fit. The scarf had a cooling quality, which felt incredibly comforting in such a hot environment.

He got up, stretched his legs in the cavern he had ended up in, and headed for the entrance of the cave to stretch his wings and tail as well. A familiar coatl fluttered to land besides him from a hidden platform.

"Oh, hello. Good morning." Frostflake said with a small smile.

"Hey, Frosty. You leaving?"

"Yes, that might be a good idea." Frostflake had not a clue why, however. Well... he had to make good memories, and he couldn't just by standing still, right?

"I suggest you fly to the surrounding flights. It's hard for a non-fire dragon to live here, honestly." The coatl said, and muttered something else to himself under his breath.

"Okay..." Frostflake could not, for the life of him, remember where he met this coatl, "Um, I'm sorry, who are you again?"

The coatl reared his head back with his fangs bared and his crest spread. Frostflake backed away warily. The coatl gave him a long, rather unsettling look, before suddenly his crest drooped.

"You seriously don't remember? My name's Skyria." The coatl said, his face scrunched up as if he smelled something quite terrible.

"Oh, Skyria." Frostflake paused, feeling like he was just meeting the coatl again.

"Do you have memory problems, Frosty?"

"I'm... afraid I do, Skyria." Frostflake said his name again, trying to remember it this time. Were they going to fight? He was definitely not a fighter! And if he was, he couldn't remember how to fight.

"... Then you can't leave yet." Skyria concluded, his face relaxing as he looked to the ground almost apologetically.

"What? I am an adult. I can go where I please."

"I cannot, in good conscience, let you go when your memory apparently resets every night. That's a death wish. If not for you, then the victims of the people who will manipulate you." Skyria stepped towards Frostflake, who recoiled. Skyria was smaller than him, but seemed to stand much taller. Skyria sat in front of him, and pulled out a pen and a notebook.

"Relax, Frosty. I'm going to find out what makes your mind tick." Skyria said, writing down notes with his pen grasped in his tail. Warily, Frostflake sat down.

And thus began a very long period of questions and experiments between the two, only pausing to eat, drink, or change location. Skyria usually avoided or shooed off any other dragons, but birds were allowed to follow them and perched nearby. Skyria did his best to try to teach Frostflake how to read and write, but the knowledge just wouldn't stick much to his irritation.

"Frostflake, what is my name?"

"Skyria?"

"Yes. Why are you staying with me?"

"I'm trying to learn how to make my memory better?"

"Right. How long have you lived with me?"

"Um... I'm not sure, sorry."

Skyria looked up at Frostflake meaningfully.

"You've stayed with me for years, Frosty."

"Oh, really? It felt like I just met you yesterday."

Skyria smiled somewhat. It was a distant smile, as if he was deciding on something.

"How did you remember my name, Frostflake?"

"Um... You smell like a Skyria." Frostflake replied, awkwardly, "That's odd, isn't it?"

"I think you ought to become a Tundra," Skyria said, closing his book, "Scent is very good for triggering your memory."

"Eh?" Frostflake looked down at himself, a shiver going through him. Change his body?! But, he's had this one for a while! He was used to it!

"Think about it, if you're smart enough to remember... I know a good way for you to store your memories." Skyria unclipped a pouch from his waist, muttered some magic, and it grew twice its size, "Take this and never take it off. You can take things that smell and store them here for you to remember."

"Oh, alright." Frostflake took the pouch and put it around his waist. Skyria turned away from him.

"You can leave."

Frostflake felt startled at the words. He looked to Skyria, blinking his eyes. As if reading his mind, Skyria repeated, "Since you have a way of triggering your memory, even at the most base level, then you're free to leave. I won't force you to stay with me anymore."

Frostflake felt a wary relief at those words. But... how did Skyria force him to stay? He couldn't remember, but he felt panic sink into his limbs at the thought of it. Maybe... Skyria truly wasn't as kind as he seemed. A friendly enemy, at the most.

Frostflake followed his instincts and ran, bolting up into the sky and for new lands. In his rush, he forgot to clip the pouch on his waist and it fell into a lava pit below, taking his way of remembering these days away from him.

Frostflake decided that his stay in Crow Callers should be fairly restful - after finding a new book to read, he just couldn't put it down. He decided to read it several times, constantly going through and rereading the parts he liked best. When he asked if he could keep the book, the dragons of Crow Callers accepted - they knew that Frostflake's memory wasn't the sharpest, but it was possible that the book might remind him of them.

Frostflake offered to come back one day. Fearing that he might forget, he decided to write down the clan's location at the back of his book. Little did he know that a young Ridgeback named RingoShuffles was hitching a ride..

Ringo managed to remain hidden the remainder of the journey- or so he thought. Upon landing in the Snowsquall Tundra Frostflake shook himself vigorously, causing the hatchling to tumble into the snow.
"We're here!" Frostflake announced.
"Excuse me, do I know you? My name's RingoShuffles. I'm searching for my brother Eckhart."
The blue ridgeback tipped his head to one side quizzically. "Well, I'm Frostflake. I have, well, a terrible memory. I just assumed I was taking you somewhere! My bad." He joked.
Ringo stared at the strange dragon. He looked clueless! There was no way this dragon could help him find Eckhart.
"Well, thank you for the lift," said Ringo graciously. "But I really must continue my search."
"You're welcome to join me on my adventure- I can't remember what it is but I'm sure I'll figure it out." Frostflake offered.
Ringo had to contain his laughter as he declined the offer. But the dragon was kindly, if a little clueless.
"I hope we meet again someday." He said.
But Frostflake, with his terrible memory, had already forgotten who Ringo was. The two dragons parted ways, both set on different journeys.

Frostflake had no idea how long he wandered across the snowscape. He battled his way through the Boreal Wood, levelling up and gaining strength with each monster defeated. Occasionally he thought he saw the glowing eyes and shadows of dragons watching him in the shadows of the woods. However, he soon forgot about his phantom followers and continued blissfully on his journey.
