Keku Variant of Kek, the primordial concept of darkness in ancient Egyptian religion

Her second comes out wrong. She has too many thoughts and desires, draws from too many sources at once. Their claws aren’t the same size, their wings are frayed at the end. Even her magic binding them to Sornieth is uneven, when they turn certain ways it’s like they blink out of being, her magic pulled too tight to hold. She lays eyes on them once before she sends them away. To her, they are a failure, a reminder of her shortcomings. She bans them from her halls and rooms, and they slink away to find another shadow to hide in. That is where their father finds them.

Where she sees failure, he sees potential and under his canny hands, they come into it in full; Simultaneously being and unbeing, a violent spectre that cannot be harmed unless they wish to be. Their weapons becomes fear and shadows as they learn to stalk, slipping from one darkened crevice to another. They are taught when to be silent and when to make sound, tools to impel their prey to their most vulnerable. Fear, when utilized, is a powerful weapon.

Leap not at those in flocks, for together they are strong in conviction. Follow, watch, wait patiently for an opening. Lower their numbers one by one, silent and quick, and eventually they will be afraid of you. And once they are afraid, their lives are yours.

As they slink from the depths, they emerge with no purpose but their own. They stick close to the ruins, precariously returning to their known hiding spots whenever the sun threatens to peak above the horizon. They move slowly, carefully, making ground only when a new place to hide from the light can be found. When they reach the Foxfire Bramble, their movements become freer as the shadows become larger. To begin with, they believe it a suitable home. Prey is rich, cover richer, but it happens often they look up, eyes caught by what little moonlight has managed to filter through the gnarled vegetation with a longing they cannot explain. Perhaps it is the knowledge of a bigger world than life beneath the brambles, perhaps it’s the desire to belong somewhere, that drives them from their newfound ‘home’ to return to their wander.

For now, their way is that of shadow, but perhaps, one day, they will learn to enter the light.
