Autumn hails from the deepest reaches of the Ashfall Waste.

྿

Born in a burst of lava and smoke, the young Skydancer emerged from the crisp remains of her egg like a phoenix from the ash.

As she grew, she proved to be an exceptionally talented elemental. Able to conjure a flame in the palm of her hand while still a hatchling, Autumn concentrated her adolescence on harnessing and increasing her power. Quickly outgrowing the lessons of the elder elementals of her clan, she left in search of a greater tutor, determined to push herself to the greatest extent of dragon magic. One by one, she continued to out-perform her masters, each successive upheaval inflating her red hot ego.

It wasn't until she decided to challenge the Flamecaller herself that Autumn learned humility.

She had been denied apprenticeship from an elderly master. Cast out, with angry flashes of red-white flame. "You lack the true nature of a master," he had told her. "Come back whence you have found it." She had been outraged. True nature? Bullhockey. She had the guts, and the power. What else was there for her to need? She had sent scorching flames in all directions, charring the walls of the den around her, before leaving without another word.

She walked, angrily contemplating her next move. She was powerful, she knew that. That senile old dragon simply didn't understand. She could have beaten him anyway; she was sure of it. She could out-flame anyone in the Ashfall Waste. Even...

Autumn stopped, considering her next thought. Even the Flamecaller..? Well, why not? If there was any way to prove that old geezer wrong, it would be to beat the Goddess herself.

She steeled herself, taking in the barren land around her. She was in the middle of the Molten Scar. Far away, it seemed, from any clan or wandering dragon save for her. She took in a deep breath, concentrating hard on the flowing lava around her.

"Flamecaller!" she shouted, voice only barely quivering at the name. "I challenge you to a duel. Come, fight me if you dare!"

Nothing happened. The land was still as ever, save for the floes of magma around her.

"I said come fight me, Flamecaller! Surely you aren't afraid of a single little Skydancer!"

A bubble rose to the surface, bursting with a slow, lazy 'pop'. Autumn laughed.

"Is that all you've got? I would have expected more from the great Goddess. Show yourself!"

The silence that followed was palpable. Autumn was about to throw another jeer at the empty air, but was instead met with a rumbling from deep within the earth. She looked around wildly, trying to locate the source, but it seemed omnipresent. It grew with increasing intensity, threatening to move mountains if it continued. Before she could scamper aside, a crack formed, quickly overtaking her as the earth split beneath her feet.

She fell. Forty- fifty- maybe even a hundred feet. How-ever far down it was, it was obvious she wouldn't be climbing back out. She looked down the length of the split, seeing what no dragon of the Molten Scar ever wanted to see. The split had passed through a vein of molten rock, sending the magma hurtling down the rift. 'Hurtling' wasn't common in describing magma. The thick, mucky substance tended to move at a unhurried pace. Unstoppable in its path, but slow. This was not slow.

Autumn scurried back as quickly as she could on the uneven bottom of the split, but it was no use. She attempted to stop the flow with her own, melting the walls around her in desperation but it didn't work. This flow seemed impervious to her magic, never slowing or responding to the rushed movements of her hands.

The magma quickly overtook her, sweeping over her in a wave of thick, scalding liquid.

It was bright, but oh-so dark. It was hot, but she was freezing cold.

Was this true power? It terrified her. Was this what she wanted? She imagined it could only be more terrifying to wield it.

Not that she would ever have the chance. This was a power far beyond that of mortal dragons... And even if she could, she already knew she wasn't going to be around to try.

At that point, Autumn knew it was over. She stopped struggling, stopped holding her breath in a vain effort to stay alive. She took a breath, letting the magma fill her lungs. It didn't hurt, but she was suffocating. Fading. Dying...

She woke up to the sound of worried voices. "Is she alive?" she heard. "I... I think so. Though how anyone could survive falling in lava beats me." ... "Poor dear; probably in the middle of collecting ore when the fissure happened. It's a dangerous job, you know. Mining the Molten Scar." At that, she twitched. Collecting ore? What were they talking about? Thoughts of her experience returned, forcing her eyes open for the first time since the magma overtook her.

"She is alive!" one of the dragons exclaimed, being the first to notice her consciousness. "You were mighty lucky there, miss. Don't think I've ever seen anyone survive fallin' in the lava before."

"Fall..? No, I didn't fall..." was all she managed to say before she was overtaken by a fit of violent coughing.

"Well, whatever it was, miss... it's no small thing to get out of there alive."

She nodded softly in agreement. Putting a hand to her face, she could feel scorching on her scales, and with a small sweep over her head, she could tell her feathers had been charred as well. Next, she did what no dragon did in the Ashfall Waste; she shivered. "I'm... cold," she said softly, sitting up and wrapping her arms around her shoulders.

"Cold..?" another of the group replied. "Hard to be cold in a place like this. Are you feeling alright? Here, let me get you up so you can come back to our camp and rest." The dragon put forward his hand, reaching for Autumn's.

She put her hand in his, using his weight to pull herself up. The other dragon simply looked at her in shock. "Why, you really are cold. How odd. Come, we will get blankets for you at camp."

The weak Skydancer followed the group to their camp, partaking in food and drink with them to build up her energy. They bundled her in blankets and saw to it she had access to a campfire, as odd as it was to build one in the middle of the Molten Scar. But she was still cold; incredibly so.

She spent the next week resting, slowly regaining energy and molting her ruined scales. On the sixth or seventh day, she finally felt well enough to walk on her own. She felt well, but she was still freezing.

Excusing herself from the camp, Autumn walked out to the lava fields. Close enough she could get back easily, but far enough that the others were out of sight. She knelt down by one of the pools of lava, holding her hands over it in an attempt to warm them. "Why am I... so cold?" she asked herself, moving them closer in frustration. This was better, but it was still not enough. Finally, she had had enough. With a deep breath, she thrust one hand straight into the rippling heat.

She was horrified and amazed to find that the magma did not hurt. It was comfortably warm, soothing her frozen fingers. She dipped her other hand in. And then her foot. And then she simply dove in, seeking its warm embrace. She felt comfortable for the first time since the incident; it was as if the magma provided the heat that her own body refused to produce.

Hours later, she returned to camp. "I'm sorry... I need to go now. Thank you for all your help," she told them, turning briskly around to leave. The others called out behind her, but she ignored them. She needed to get out of here. Fast.

She went back to the pool, putting her hand out to it again. With practiced movement, she whisked her fingers upwards, so that her palm faced the ashen sky. The lava rippled, causing her to do it again. This time, the molten rock sprang from its pool, hovering in the air before her. Good, she thought. At least her magic had stayed intact.

She bent the magma through the air, wrapping it across her shoulders like a shawl. It took massive amounts of concentration to keep it clinging to her body, but it was better than freezing. Now, she had to get out of here; she couldn't stay in the Ashfall Waste any longer. She was sick of this fire, of this land. And she feared the Goddess who made her this way.

She traveled north, as fast as her legs would carry her. The concentration it took to keep the magma to her skin was far too much for her to keep while flying. Even running took too much effort at times, and she would have to stop and rest. Even with her greatest efforts, she still had to resort to melting nearby rocks into their molten form to replenish her supply.

Autumn never stopped moving. The Skydancer had made it clear to herself that there would be no stopping until she found a clan able to aid her.She passed through many clans and saw the scenery change from the storm of the Shifting Expanse, to the bright sun of the Sunbeam Ruins, and finally to the pitch black of the Tangled Wood.

While the dark of the Wood confounded most travelers, Autumn's brilliant coat cast light in all directions. She traveled through brush, careful to avoid catching branches in her lava. She followed footpaths into the deep until she finally came across another clan. One she was sure would be just as helpful as the others; not at all. But she was desperate, and ready to try regardless.

When she entered the clearing that seemed to be the center of the clan, she announced her arrival and explained her situation. Of course, she left out the part about the Flamecaller. She had learned early on that no-one believed she had encountered the Goddess herself that day.

When she had finished, she looked around, ready to receive the news that she could not be helped. But instead, she saw another Skydancer approach. He bowed his head before looking her in the eye.

"I studied my craft in the Ashfall Waste for some time. I have seen the flames of many a forge, but no flame has been as strong or bright as the one you carry. I..." he took a minute to gather his words. "I think I can help."
