EMPRESS
[ CUNNING | DECEPTIVE | SOCIALLY INTELLIGENT ]
A lonely set of footsteps echoed through the near-empty palace hall. They held the sound of a steady pace -- the sort of measured steps one with purpose employed. Not slow, but not particularly rushed, either. They belonged to Liu Qi: the current wife of the Great Emperor. As always, she carried herself with palpable dignity. Her eyes were keenly focused, but ever on her purpose. Her mouth was set in a relaxed frown, as though chiseled and painted into place. She didn't so much as glance at anyone or anything unless she had already intended to. Confident, but not content, nor reliant on an interested ear. The empress exuded power like few others. And so it was today, as all others.
However, inside, the empress' fury churned and roiled. She had just come from deep within the palace, where she had met with her secret yet again. As with all other times, the two had a hard time agreeing...
"Everything I do, I do because I love you," she had insisted.
"Everything you do, you do for power!" he'd spat in return.
Immediately after that rebuttal, the empress' hand had flown, striking her son's cheek so hard that it had turned his head. Slowly, he'd returned it, glaring at his mother.
In that time, she had thought of a response. Hissing through her teeth, Liu Qi had slowly gritted out, "You will treat me with respect, ungrateful child."
He hadn't replied at first. When he did, however, his voice was much more gentle -- even pitying -- than his face would have caused one to expect. "Don't do it."
She'd left him then. She was too furious to stay. He was naive, thinking that her methods were unnecessary for his ascension to the throne. He would have rather been like the hero of a bedtime story, or perhaps not an emperor at all. Rui was destined to become the next Great Emperor, however. His mother would make sure of that. She only had to wait for the right opportunity to strike down those in her way.
