Eliezer was the first-hatched of one of Clan Adeptica's rare five-egg nests. His younger brother, Ephron, was the one favored by his parents to carry on the family line. Then, a disaster struck that shook the clan. Their mother, Duskbright, became the first and only dragon Lady Adeptica and Lord Devon ever had to impose a punishment upon. Whether the fatal explosion was truly her fault may never have been provable, but the damage was done, and she was shunned by the clan leaders and forbidden from using her magic within their territory. As a talented mage, she fled to another clan rather than give up her magic.

Eliezer and Ephron never truly forgave their clan leaders. They stayed in Clan Adeptica, but they kept a sense of rebellion, of standing apart from the rest of the clan, as a family secret. Ephron's children were the only ones to whom they ever told their true feelings. Felicity, one of his daughters, grew up brave, stealthy, and independent, and went on to help found her own clan.

For Eliezer, his mother's exile was the catalyst that started another kind of rebellion - a rebellion against magic as a whole, and against the Arcanist in particular. Duskbright was a true devotee of his ways and a very powerful mage, so Eliezer blames him for everything that happened to her mother. Despite having been hatched in the Starfall Isles, Eliezer has chosen to devote himself to the ways of the Stormcatcher, instead of those of the Arcanist - he rebels by choosing to "change the world to adapt to him, rather than adapting to the world." He and Hannah were attracted to each other by their shared dedication to the Stormcatcher's cause, and so they had to travel to the Shifting Expanse to have their own hatchlings. Their son, Roko, is just as much of a devotee of science, logic, and reason as his parents.
