Empire of Death: Clan of Death

Wells was raised in a clan of elegant dragons. Expensive silks and jewelry were a common sight amongst the higher class but even the lower classes had only the most extravagant tools and armor for their work. The young pearlcatcher often felt out of place. Sure, he loved the flowing apparel and beautiful wardrobes he adorned but unlike those around him he wished to do more with his life than just sit around gossiping or watching the lesser work.

He had a passion for constructing things and was often scolded as a hatchling growing up for digging in the dirt. It was seen as filthy work and something unsuitable for a dragon of his rank. For a long time Wells put up with the berating and played along with their expectations of him. Whenever their backs were turned however... he'd slip away and study the trade of building and architecture. It amazed the young pearlcatcher how much really went on in creating strong foundations for them to reside in.

As he grew older, Wells began a journal sketching out his own ideas and making notes of the teachings. Being bigger now however meant it was more difficult for him to slip away from social gatherings and watchful eyes. His family even began the discussion of finding a suitable mate for him so he could court them and one day start a family of their own. The idea horrified the young dragon. He had little desire to start a family let alone try to be paired off with some dragoness. It was a tradition in the clan though and expected to happen sooner or later once a dragon reached his age.

So Wells left. It was the only other option when he wanted to pursue his dreams. The pearlcatcher parted from his parents on friendly terms, though they did wish he would stay. It would be strange for him not to take a mate but they'd been willing to drop the subject for the sake of having him stay. But Wells couldn't do it, not when he would be expected to continue putting off his desire to lower himself—as they put it—to a lesser class of dragon. His mentor gifted him a drill upon their parting and it was the last he saw of any of them, though he does write home on the occasion.

He ended up in the Clan of Death within the Empire of Death. They were in need of an architect to help construct their growing empire. With his top of the line tools and lessons he gladly took the opportunity to gain some real experience. The pearlcatcher takes great pride in his accomplishments; without him the empire couldn't have grown as quickly as it had to accommodate all the dragons living within. It was hard work, and often dirty, but Wells loved it.

Of course, he still had his roots. His fancy outfit that he wears with his tools is a strange appearance to many. Those who don't know him are often confused by the odd attire—many wouldn't guess what he did. It wasn't easy to keep his outfit in pristine condition but with magic was a wonderful thing. The delicate silks he wore were strengthened with it and he'd mastered the ability to clean such fabrics as well. Rarely, he'll even get a new addition to his wardrobe from his parents. Wells knows his rank in the clan isn't the highest, and it isn't the cleanest job, but that doesn't mean he can't look regal. At the end of the day, he has everything he could ever want.
