To Percival and Lepi,
Of the Wandering Snows Clan,
Fortress of Ends,
Southern Icefield

Dear Mother, dear Father,

I hope this letter finds you well.

Forgive me for not writing earlier, but the last few months have been as chaotic as they have been wonderful. I very much enjoyed my time with the caravan you send me off with, even if I was little more than an errand boy for the merchants. I have seen so much since we last spoke! We crossed over to the Windswept Plateau once we reached the Tundra, so we could join a major market on the Cloudsong. It was magnificent! I have never seen so many dragons in one place, and what a place! I am glad I am not suffering from a fear of heights, or my days there would have been quite miserable. I do not know if you have had occasion to visit the Cloudsong in your own travels, but it is a cheerful place, so full of colours and dragons and whirlwind activity it made me quite dizzy regardless.

Once the markets came to an end, we travelled onwards towards the Sea of a Thousand Currents, were we boarded a vessel bound for the Sunbeam Ruins, were my companions hoped to make good money with fossils and artefacts from our home. We were lucky to have as calm and easy a journey as we had, if the sailors are to be believed, who regaled us with horror stories about terrible storms and monsters lurking in the deep. (Personally, I do not believe we ever were in much danger; we paid our duty, and the trade routes are too beneficial for the Water Flight to be ill protected.)

I may have gone on merrily like that, and become a trader yet, had I not made the acquaintance of two fellow travelers on our journey across the sea: Eldrin, a scholar of the Arcane, and Moonglider, his… assistant? Protégée? Travel companion? It is difficult to describe the relationship between these two, as despite acting as an assistant to Eldrin, the two rarely agree on anything. Nevertheless, they appear to be quite fond of each other.

Whatever their relation, their interests lie in the research of the stranger and unexplainable wonders of Sornieth. They were on their way to the Hewn City, that mysterious areal in the midst of the Sunbeam Ruins, forever cloaked in shadowy mists that are said to rival even the twilight of the Tangled Woods. I must confess, I became quite enarmoured with their tales of adventure and discovery, and when I heard that they were looking for an additional member to their group, “one of a more pragmatic disposition” as Eldrin put it, I jumped at the chance. You know I have always been a curious hatchling, and eager to learn about the workings of magic, even if my aptitude in that area is too poor to ever amount to much of anything!

Do not fret though; I still have no ambitions of becoming a mage. I will act as a guard and assistant to the pair, and will hopefully learn much in the process. If they are not bickering amongst each other, the two are quite friendly and seem to love to indulge my curiosity. Eldrin has also gifted me with a set of enchanted jewelry that is supposed to protect me from evil spirits. It also makes me look like one of these decorative trees they put up for the Crystalline Gala. Moonglider says it’s all superstitious nonsense, and anyway it’s not going to work if I’m not wearing the full set, and apparently it’s missing a piece. I am still wearing it – one never knows, after all, and I do not want to offend the old scholar.

We will not be traversing the Hewn City on our own either; Eldrin has arranged matters with a local mercenary group, the Crimson Claws, who make much of their treasure providing guides and protection to researchers who wish to explore the ruins. We are currently staying with the clan that is their base of operations, and apart from our forays in the Hewn city proper, this will be our home for the foreseeable future. They are a motley group, and some of them are rather… odd (it comes with the territory, I imagine), but on the whole, they seem like a decent lot. I am sure I will feel at home here, and I am excited for our first expedition into the ruins!

In exhilarated spirits,

Your son Yuiri,
Currently of Clawrift Clan
Hewn City,
Sunbeam Ruins

P.S.: It seems to be custom in these parts to give young dragons a sort of by-name that references some of their outstanding characteristics or important events in their life. I’ve been told if I am going to stay here for a while, I won’t escape getting one as well. I hope it is something impressive, like “Shadeslayer” or “Deathwing”… on the other hand, maybe not, I do not think I really want to do any shadeslaying. (Is that even possible?)
What do you think would suit me?

Yuiri-

Lepi is out hunting, so it is me, Percival, responding.
I simply do not have the words to give a more full response, my son-- it seems you have journeyed far and well from home!

Currently we here at the Wandering Snows clan have spent some time rebuilding after various events... we're a mess of shambles, you know. But I've been helping where I can, and helping your grandparents since they are smaller than we both are as you know! Strange, them being Tundras.

I do wish you the best in traveling and working with your chosen destination however. I've been near the Hewn City-- it frightens me a bit. Please do let me send one or two ""good luck"" charms your way, even if they are simply a bit of superstition.

Please do write when you can,
Percival
