Lore

If you showed Hauynite a tiny kitten, he would probably grunt something at you through his mustache about not wanting any more annoying critters around. But if you left him alone in a room with a tiny kitten and peeked through the keyhole, you might catch him cuddling the little thing, speaking softly and kissing the top of its head with surprising gentleness. He’s just that strange sort of dragon.

Hauynite grew up on the border of Dragonhome and The Wandering Contagion. Even before he was fully grown, he had fought in border skirmishes against bands of Plague dragons raiding into Earth territory to steal food and supplies from clans there. His parents came from one such clan, and when they were killed in such a skirmish, he was taken in by a group of mercenaries who were hired by the clan long term to protect the border. The mercenaries intended only for him to assist them with menial maintenance tasks such as cleaning armor, in exchange for a warm tent to call home and a ‘family’ to keep his belly full and teach him the ways of border life. Unsurprisingly, he grew to idolize his band of mercenary family, and wanted nothing more than to grow up strong and fast to fight alongside them. He ate every bit of food he was given, and threw himself into any task, determined to build strength and stamina. His resolve paid off, and he reached adulthood a huge, fit Snapper.

He may have been rough and not well educated, but Hauynite grew to be fiercely loyal, with a sound moral compass and a stomach for hard and often dirty work. He sometimes lost mates to violence on the border, and sometimes had to take lives. But he made many more good brothers in arms and defended the lives of many, and he didn’t regret his choices. Such was the way of border mercenary life.
The years passed, and Hauynite lived them fully doing what he loved. There wasn’t merely fighting – in quieter times the mercenaries were hired for menial labour, and he did his fair share of digging lairs, hewing stone and carting supplies.

As he grew older, he began to think of retiring to a quieter life. Smart mercenaries left the business when they reached an age where their bodies began to slow – lest some quick young Wildclaw put a talon between their ribs – and many of his older brothers had done so already. He eventually settled on life as a guard. His huge stature and intimidating demeanor would serve him well in such a role, and the work was much less dangerous. His searching took him to the roaming snail, Snastle, and he joined the clan as a guard.

There isn’t much by way of violent or illegal activity in the small, peaceful clan, and what little there is has been sanctioned by its members, such as the pirate hunters aboard the airship Marco’s Vengeance, run by Captain Pyrite, or the Beastclan Defenders. Visitors are frequent but due to the nature of Snastle as a living lair, anyone unwelcome can be easily excluded, usually dumped out of the entrance in a wash of slime for their trouble. Attack by air would be plausible, but unlikely, and the clan’s Vault – the stash of valuables – was guarded diligently already by Orpiment.

However, every now and again, Snastle sets down in one place, lowering her shell to lay on the ground and retreating into it to rest. During these times a marketplace springs to life around the base of the huge shell, and dragons are invited to come in scores as the clan attempts to ply their trades and sell the wares they had been working on while Snastle roamed. It is these bustling markets which Hauynite’s services are required for, and the gruff old Snapper patrols around all over, ensuring everything and everyone remains safe and unbothered.
He enjoys the work, and gets along well with the clan, lending a neighborly hand with all sorts of things around the lair during the times he isn’t guarding. He’s a friendly fellow once you get to know him, always chuckling about something or another.
