Personality: Similan, more commonly referred to as Sim or Simmy by his friends, is a dragon of an inquisitive nature. He has an encyclopedic memory for things he’s read in books, and loves to parrot what he’s read back for anybody that will listen. A big ol’ nerd at heart, if you talk history to him he will chatter with you for hours- the events, the philosophy, the politics, the mythology, all of it.

Simmy is unfortunately not what one would call the most empathetic. Not that he’s intentionally cruel or nasty, far from it; he is polite almost to a fault and does his best to be productive and helpful. He’s just got the emotional perceptiveness of a goldfish, and is a bit too practical and blunt for his own good a lot of the time. He is well known for saying something with cheerful frankness that confuses, upsets, or even offends others, then being surprised when they express that unhappiness.

History: Born in the frozen floes far to the east of Clan Brayuh’s territory, Similan’s birth clan moved to the Viridian Labyrinth when he was still quite young to find a territory that was more abundant with food and resources to support their growing clan. He was assigned as female at birth and raised much that way, but it never felt right to Sim, something he never confessed to anyone except his childhood friend, a lightning flight imperial their group had adopted named Arata. Simmy and Arata were basically inseparable as fledglings, the best of friends who got into all manner of mischief together.

As he got older, Similan came to love reading and studying about the history of dragons, and the myths of ages long past. It fascinated him to consider just how huge and very, very old their world really was. He began to recognize patterns in the shape of dragonkind’s history, and wondered at the way one could almost predict how things would play out during one time period based on similarities to other times- almost, but not quite, because people could and did surprise you. As he got older he threw himself into this study, rapidly becoming an expert in the local history of the area his clan lived in and making frequent trips further afield to study the stories that had taken place and been recorded elsewhere. It was during this part of his early adulthood that he would fall in love with and marry his old friend Arata.

Simmy came out as a trans man not long after his formal marriage, and left his birth clan with his husband so that they could start a life somewhere that no one had ever known him as a woman. They decided to make their home in the land of Simmy’s birth, the Southern Icefields. The new surroundings made transitioning for him a lot less frustrating and stressful than it might have been otherwise, though he is still on good terms with his family and visits from time to time. He works as a historian for his new adoptive clan, Clan Brayuh, helping preserve and translate the older texts in the clan library and occasionally teaching the youngsters of the clan about the long, storied world of Sornieth.

Love Life: Arata and Similan were best friends since they were just barely old enough to start hopping and fluttering their underdeveloped wings to begin strengthening them to fly. Arata was one of the few who well understood Simmy’s blunt mode of speech and never became offended by it; more often than not actually finding his friend’s social ineptitude charming and gently coaching him through awkward situations. Though not as personally interested in history as Similan, Arata did enjoy learning and knowing things, and frequently tagged along on his friend’s many early excursions away from their birth clan. It was on one of these trips that the duo found themselves overlooking a decidedly romantic sunset vista, and an unintentional brush of their hands made both of them realize that maaaaybe they were starting to feel more for each other than friendship. From that first evening of tentative butterflies, they rapidly fell head over heels for one another, to the surprise of precisely nobody except for the two of them.

Even years later, Similan is still goofily, cheesily romantic with his husband, blushing and squirming like a besotted teenager when Arata does something charming. The lightning imperial finds this adorable and hilarious, and enjoys entertaining his students by flustering Simmy when he comes to visit his husband during a lecture.
