Astrologer, Medium, Psychic
Professional Scammer

Crafty | Deceptive | Cowardly

Rose colored smoke swirls around you as you make your way past the beaded curtain and into the odd, little room. An enticing scent hangs in the air, catching your attention and beckoning you forward. As your eyes adjust to the dim lights, you begin to observe your surroundings, making out detail after detail. A map of the skies stretches across the ceiling, cryptic symbols cover the walls, and here and there the flickering flame of a candle casts startling shadows around you. It is all very strange.

But nothing is stranger than the dragon sitting in front of you.

A candle floats gently towards the Spiral, illuminating their glimmering skin. It shines, not from a reflection but from within, as if the dragon’s own blood was coursing with magic. Their cloak sways gently behind them, its glowing stars their own private galaxy. And then there’s their eyes…

The Spiral lifts their hand, and a deck of cards comes flying towards them. They turn their gaze to you, and smile.

‘Welcome, I am Ophiuchus, Messenger of the Stars’, they say, ‘You’ve come to discover your future, let us begin…’

---

The tired Spiral threw himself down on the battered sofa, letting out a loud sigh. His robe, once so magical and breathtaking, now looked as dull as any other in the harsh, artificial light of the backroom. He brought his hands to his face, glitter and paint still covering his skin. Gods, removing this is gonna be a pain in the…

‘Astounding! That was astounding!’, the young priest said. He’d been watching the divination from the backroom, excited to see Ophiuchus’ godly powers, ‘The way you used the position of the stars to peer into that dragon’s future…’

‘Thank you, Alisdair,’ The Spiral said, his voice less imposing now than it had been during the soothsaying. It sounded…normal. Plain. He walked towards the room’s only mirror and grabbed a makeup towel. The glitter was starting to itch.

The young priest shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

‘I do have a question, though, Roger. Was all of that actua-

‘DON’T call me Roger, Alisdair’, the Spiral cried. He’d already removed some paint from his face, his tomato-colored skin peeking through, ‘We’ve talked about this’.

‘Sorry, Ophiuchus’, the priest corrected, ‘But about your magic…is it really, uhm, divine? Did the Arcanist truly gift you with those powers? And your skin…why do you-‘

‘O-of course my magic is divine!’, Ophiuchus said, beads of sweat mixing with his makeup. I can’t deal with this kid, ‘The Arcanist has most definitely blessed me, don’t you doubt that. As for the skin, well, let’s just say it gives dragons more…confidence.’ And me, more money.

‘Oh, oh, alright’, Alisdair said, a genuine smile crossing his face, ‘That makes sense!’

Ophiuchus could only stare in disbelief. I…guess? I guess it makes sense? There’s no way it should make sense, but…I guess? He lowered his gaze, his eyes meeting the still damp makeup towel, smeared with pink paint and glitter. He looked around, at his run-down backroom, his cheap props, and his mock-up clothes, which were as fake as he was. I guess? He looked back at the young priest, and at his bright, wide smile.

Ophiuchus sighed.

What have I gotten myself into?
