Kaine doesn't know his parents, or if he even had any. All he knows was that since day one, he has been on his own. He'd been rejected from other Clans because he hadn't found his Charge; his whole life had been one big Search. Humiliated and ashamed, he wandered all over the world in a desperate attempt to find his Charge.

Finally, he was led to the Plague domain, where he found Apocalypse. He knew at once that she was his Charge, and so vowed to never leave her side. He is now her right-claw dragon, and she has absolute trust in him. His birdskull headdress signifies his position of power, but he is distinguished from Apocalypse by his not wearing a Crown of bones. Kaine is strong and loyal--he will fight to protect Apocalypse and their Clan until his dying breath.

He discovered his small frog companion (named Jumping Bean) in the land of Shadow: Kaine was malnourished and starving, yet he didn't eat the one prey item he found, a frog. The frog seemed to understand it had been spared and followed Kaine everywhere, and it is still (miraculously) alive. The Clan is forbidden to eat Jumping Bean, and any dragon that does so faces the punishment of death.

Kaine's dodo friend was rescued, spared from being eaten by a Clanmate. The dodo is named Odod. He cannot fly, and thus must settle for waddling around. Unfortunately, he is a bit unbalanced and missing a toe on his left foot. This small difference ends with Odod faceplanting (beakplanting?)
quite a bit. Odod is very thankful for being saved, and will fiercely defend Kaine from offenders by pecking toes. He is forbidden to eat, just like Jumping Bean. If a member of the Athanatos Rogue clan dares eat Odod, they will be killed.
