Nine Days Aloft by a Foot
nine months in the dark

26842902_350.png
Visible from all horizons towers the sturdy, ancient tree, The Behemoth. Scoria walked side by side wth his elder fiancee, Breccia, making loops around Dragon Home, but the vision of the branches touching the sky inspired longing in his heart. He veered one day and journeyed to the Viridian Labyrinth. Rich loam, moist clay, riverbed silt shifting around smooth, round stones caught his eye more than the many shades of green and the brilliant flowers. Such bright colors made his eyes ache, and he was glad to step out of the warm sun into the comfortable, cool shade under the trees.

After winding around roots, wriggling past vines, sloughing through muddy bogs, Scoria had his fill of biting flies and damp. Hopelessly lost, there was nowhere to go but deeper. At long last he reached the heart. Feet like roots shifted, unspeakably massive, breathing slow. The deity's size brought mountains to mind. Scoria gazed up but there was too much to see. He couldn't fully realize a giant when standing by her toes. His breathless awe shattered when he stepped into a Beast Clan trap, a snare in the form of a sturdy vine which hauled Scoria up by one rear foot.

A thorn wedged itself in his side on the way up. The young snapper cried in surprise and pain. There he hung, wound oozing, blood rushing to his head. When he looked down he saw the sun dappled on the forest floor, he saw a confusing tangle of plants, and it was like he was alone. The breathing of the Gladekeeper soothed his fears. There was only to wait.

Nine days.

Nine days of introspection.

Nine nights of noisy hoots and howls.

Insects and bats drank from his wounds. Birds perched on him briefly, only to realize this miserable creature was alive. Dehydrated and starving, a strange sense emerged from the dapples on the forest floor, from the creases in the bark hide on the leg beside him, from the very cycle of day and night.

It was then that the vine snapped. Bruised and weak, Scoria got to his feet, freed himself of the snare, and limped into the woods. He ate heartily of the many plants all around, quenched his thirst at one of the rivers, and began his return trip. The sense he had made in his delirium condensed into a sort of wisdom. He returned to his mate weary and glad to be home.
