He was called the shadow thief. As the son of two thieves who disguised themselves as merchants, Rugore was born into a life of deception and treachery. His parents taught him well and the young dragon trained to hide in the shadows and steal without being noticed. He could manipulate anyone with his words and he had a penchant for tracking down the objects that dragons cared for most. . . and stealing them.

Rugore spent his childhood traveling with his family and helping them stage robberies. While they made their permanent home on the outskirts of the Rotrock Rim, the thieves often traveled across the realms; hopping from clan to clan with deceptive smiles on their faces and false words on their tongues. They gained the trust of countless clans only to betray them the moment they had a chance. Back then, the Mirror had two sisters, Phorcys and Sadon, who he trusted with his life. “A thief can trust no one,” Rugore’s parents told him and one day, he would realize just how right they were.

“Where are we going next, father?” Rugore questioned. There were rumors on the wind again about a clan inhabiting the cliffs surrounding the Sunbeam Ruins. Rugore’s father pointed to their map, a devious smirk on his face. “The Kingdom of Ouroboros. It is said that their ruler carries an amulet that grants its wearer the power of deception. If you wear this amulet,” Trajjec said, “no one will ever suspect you of lying. They will believe every word you say.” Rugore smiled back at his father, “then let’s go get it”.

Their mission went well at first. The family waited for one of the days when not a single cloud loitered in the sunlit sky and the royal family of the Kingdom opened their gates for celebration. “We are but humble peddlers,” Rugore’s parents said at the gates before rolling their cart onto the courtyard. They joined the festivities, offering games and selling unusual trinkets that they had stolen from other clans they’d visited. When the activity died down for the night, Trajjec and Apate sent Rugore to retrieve the amulet. “You’ll need this,” they said before handing their son a pouch of fine powder. “It’s sleeping powder, simply blow it onto your target. . and they’ll fall asleep”.

Getting past the guards was not a problem. “I-I’m sorry,” the Mirror said as he approached the palace gates, “I can’t find my family.” He put on the display just long enough to blow the fine powder onto the guards, smiling as they collapsed in front of him. Rugore slipped by guard after guard as he infiltrated the palace until he finally came to the queen’s chambers. He opened the door a crack and saw the Skydancer’s form standing in the window, golden amulet gleaming around her neck in the moonlight. Undetected, Rugore snuck up quietly behind the queen before softly blowing the sleeping powder onto her form. Unlike the guards, however, the Skydancer did not fall to the ground. Instead, Rugore was met with a low laugh. “Did you really believe that would work on me?” the queen said bitterly, finally turning from the window. “I suppose, you came for this,” the Skydancer said, gently tapping the golden amulet. Rugore stood nervously before the queen, wondering what she would do now that he’d been caught. “You look nervous,” the queen said with a smile as she approached Rugore who found that despite his best attempts, he couldn’t move as the queen bent down to whisper in his ear. “Don’t worry, you will be punished for this. Come along.”

Rugore wanted to run, but his body seemed to move on its own, following the queen down the palace corridors until they came to a large open throne room where his parents and sisters awaited, already tied with rope and held down by the palace guards. “Rugore!” his father gasped, “how could you betray us like this? Yo-you snuck into the palace? To steal? Despite how we raised you?” The Mirror couldn’t believe what he was hearing, his parents were. . lying. “Please, your majesty, we had no idea that our children planned all of this on their own, we are but humble peddlers.” The queen remained silent for a moment. The look on her face told Rugore that she saw right through the lies, but she waved to the guards anyway and Rugore watched as his parents thanked the queen and snuck away, leaving their children to face the punishment. The Mirror felt hot tears stain his cheeks, “what!” he screamed at the queen, “will you kill us now?”

“No.” the Skydancer said simply, “you’re free to go. Right after. .” the queen waved her hand and Rugore heard a snap, looking over to his sisters who now laid limp on the ground, their lifeless eyes staring blankly towards their brother. “No!” Rugore screamed before he was met with a blinding light and then darkness. He heard the queen whisper something else in his ear, “I hope you’ve enjoyed the last sight you’ll see in your lifetime.” Rugore felt the arms of guards lift his limp form from the ground before he was tossed outside of the lair, landing in the dirt. His parents had already fled the kingdom and for the first time in his life, the mirror was alone.

It was said that time could heal anything, but not for Rugore. Years after the incident, he still couldn't forget how his parents betrayed him or how queen Lytta killed his sisters. The Mirror saw the memories replay themselves in his dreams and he awoke screaming with tears in his eyes. After he was cast from the kingdom, Rugore used his blindness to take advantage of dragons who looked upon him with pity. He hopped from clan to clan and lived off the kindness of others who supplied him with food and shelter.

"What if I told you that there's a way to forget all of your pain?" Rugore overheard the voice in a tavern as another traveler spoke of a cracked pearl with the power to sequester the memories of anyone who touched it. Rugore spent months following rumors of the damaged pearl. It belonged to a Pearlcatcher residing in a place called the Cathedral of Eyes, but even the location remained elusive. . . until Rugore simply stumbled upon it one day. Perhaps because he was blind and couldn't see where he was going or perhaps simply by fate, the Mirror found himself beneath an enormous redwood tree that towered on the cliffside. He heard whispers emanating from the bark and when he leaned close, he could hear them speak to him. "What you seek is here," the voices whispered, "but you will pay a price if you choose to forget."

"Please," Rugore whispered back, "I don't want these memories, they only bring me pain". There was silence for a moment before Rugore heard the response, "very well." The Mirror entered the Cathedral like a shadow, guided by whispers that drew him to the pearl. He reached out when the voices told him and felt the smooth exterior of the pearl interspersed with cracks and Rugore began to forget. His parents, his siblings, all of his memories were sucked into the pearl. When it was done, the Mirror no longer knew who he was. He only knew that the object he held was valuable and he refused to put it down. The Mirror became a shell of his former self and under the pearl's influence, he didn't reman a Mirror for long. His form took on a transparency and re-molded itself into that of a Pearlcatcher. The pearl whispers to him, telling him where he must go.

The Pearlcatcher wanders in the shadows, stealing the memories of those he comes across. He knows something is missing, but he can't remember what it is. He lives with an emptiness inside of him and no matter how many memories he steals, nothing can fill the void.
