"I won't let this pain get in the way - not if I can help it."

"He is known more for his dyework than his nimble fingers. Bring him a swatch to match or describe for him any myriad range of colors, and he will work endlessly until he is satisfied he has matched it. But his hands are horned with arthritis, even at an early age, and he must be careful planning his trips, as his hips are prone to inflammation. He must be careful to make soft landings and also be careful of how long he walks and how he sits and lays, or else he is in pain for days until the healers can ease it out of him again. But he does not want his chronic pain to come in the way of him living a full and fulfilling life." - ixris

Ember was plagued with ill health from an early age - constantly in pain, unable to emulate the energy and agility of his siblings or other hatchlings. He was finally given a diagnosis of arthritis. The healers did what the could to help the imperial's inflammation, but he was still limited in what he could do. His hands lacked the grip and dexterity needed to truly excel in the apparel industry, so instead he focused on dyes, developing a keen eye and an extensive knowledge of which ingredients made each exact shade.

He was largely solitary, given his health, but Eugene was a constant presence in his life. The son of a basket-maker and rush-weaver, the pearlcatcher wished to weave things of greater intricacy and delicacy, so he turned to cloth - which brought him to Ember's father. Thrown together with Ember for training, he soon became the imperial's conduit for the outside world, a fount of gossip about the goings on in the clan.

Ember never thought he would be able to travel, given his condition, but he had word from an elder brother who had opened an apparel shop in the Starfall Isles - an invitation for any siblings who wished to join him in his venture. Eugene, eager to travel, pressured Ember to accept, boasting that he would be his caretaker and provide for anything he needed along the way. Finally Ember gave into his friend's pestering, for he, too, secretly wanted to see what lay out there, what colors decorated the world.

Their journey was long and tedious. Though he had taken ample medicine with him, he constantly worried about running out, because the medicine was all that was keeping the pain at bay and him in semi-mobility most days. Even with the medicine, he had bad days where he couldn't travel at all. He could sense his friend's impatience, but Eugene remained by his side, even though he offered that the pearlcatcher could travel on without him. Eugene seemed wounded by the suggestion, offended that Ember would even think that he might abandon him.

Finally they reached their destination, and Ember was able to introduce himself and Eugene to his elder brother Yew, who seemed delighted that one of his siblings had accepted his invitation, though he was initially unsure about the pearlcatcher tagalong. He soon became impressed by Eugene's work, however, and permitted him to work alongside Ember in the Stitchery.

Though Ember was offered a dwelling space on Coatl Cove, it was too difficult for him to travel home to the cliffs every day, so an apartment was added on in the rear of the Stitchery. Eugene chose to live there with him. Though Ember regrets that this separates his friend from the hustle and bustle of the majority of the clan on the island proper, he's secretly glad of the companionship.

All healers or physicians who stay for any length of time in the clan pay him regular visits, both to replenish his medicine and to try new therapies. The only ones who seem to truly understand what he's going through are the pearlcatcher Blain, who similarly suffers from a chronic condition and endures constant pain, and the skydancer Hazelmist, who was born without a leg and with a debilitating lung disorder. He enjoys Blain's visits to the mainland when Sift ventures forth to purchase new materials for the library, and he's grateful for Hazelmist's presence when he's being examined by Hazel's father, the physician Cindermoon.

When word reached Lantern Port of their mother Shula's demise and their father's subsequent departure from Oakrest, their sons were devastated, both by the thought of never again seeing their mother's face and the loss of the familial tethers that bound them to their birthplace. They felt uprooted and adrift, a bit regretful that they had been so focused on building up their shop that they hadn't taken the time to visit their parents, though Ember at least had the excuse of being too ill to easily travel. Such an excuse doesn't lessen the sting of loss, though - it merely highlights his own fragility and mortality and makes him wonder if he will achieve as much as his mother had before he, too, finally succumbs to ill health.

The Stitchery was closed for a period of mourning while a memorial tapestry was made. It was largely the work of Yew and Ember, who knew their mother best, but Eugene, who had trained under Brightwork, wove the cloth that Ember dyed, and Winternight, at the time the only member of the shop not from Oakrest, helped Yew with the stitching and resolved himself to learn from their experience and strengthen his own ties with his remaining family. Each of them poured themselves into their work - the narratives of their birthplace and the dragons who had lived there and who live there still, the stories woven into each of their hearts, the skills sewn into their claws, and the regret caused by the dangling threads of tales that will never be completed. When the tapestry was finished, it was hung behind the shop's counter so that it could watch over that which Shula and Brightwork's legacy had built. Many of the store's patrons have commented on its beauty and inquired as to purchasing it, but the dragons who made it find that no price can be placed on memory and refuse to part with it, no matter the sum offered.

Let me unlock
This cage

I can do nothing
About the chains

But for a time
We can walk
In sunlight

Let me show you
The blue sky
That stained your hands
Last Thursday

And the red poppies
That wrapped
The goddess fair

And these peaches
Sunrise gold
That crack moist
Between our teeth
As juice drips down our chins

Let us laugh

Let me walk beside you
Under petaled avenues
And we will go as far
As we may

Then rest

I will tell you stories
As crickets fill
The dew

Just to watch you
Hang
On every word

I have watched you
Watch my hands
Nimbly make
What you cannot

But have you seen
How full
You make my life?

It was not
This colorfast
Before
