"Sometimes I feel guilty that I can do things that you can't." Though at first he studied under his mother making baskets and weaving rushes, Eugene found himself longing for finer, more delicate work. His parents arranged for him to study under one of their clan's finest craftsdragons, from whom he learned to weave beautiful cloth. A friendly, gossip-loving dragon, he was quick to sense that his teacher's son and fellow student, a gifted dyemaker, was lonely. He delighted in entertaining the homebound imperial Ember, telling him outrageous stories of all of the goings-on in the clan to help distract him from the chronic pain caused by the latter's arthritis. Eugene always hoped to travel one day, so when Ember received a letter from a brother in the Starfall Isles who invited him to join his business, the pearlcatcher pressured him to accept, promising that he would help care for the imperial and get him through the long and arduous journey. He made good on his promise, though he felt incredibly guilty at times, as his friend was incredibly embarrassed at their slow pace, and he knew Ember was hiding how much pain he was really in. Finally they made it to Lantern Port and located the Stitchery, the shop owned by Ember's brother Yew, who wasn't entirely thrilled that a pearlcatcher was butting into his family's business. Ember's staunch support and Eugene's own skill finally impressed the skydancer, though, and Eugene was permitted to join the business. As it was too difficult for Ember to move easily to and from the mainland, Eugene decided to live with him in the back of the shop, though when he isn't working, he makes frequent trips down to the docks and over to the island to catch up on the latest news and gossip. Though all members of the Stitchery work occasionally with the stylist Skah, Eugene is the one who relates best to the flamboyant pearlcatcher and the one most likely to be roped into the other's makeover schemes. When word reached Lantern Port of Shula's demise and Brightwork's subsequent departure from Oakrest, their sons Yew and Ember were devastated, both by the thought of never again seeing their mother's face and the loss of the familial tethers that bound them to their birthplace. They felt uprooted and adrift, a bit regretful that they had been so focused on building up their shop that they hadn't taken the time to visit their parents, though Ember at least had the excuse of being too ill to easily travel. Eugene did his best to comfort and reassure the imperial, though he wished he had visited Brightwork and showed the skydancer that the time he had spent teaching a young pearlcatcher had not been wasted. The Stitchery was closed for a period of mourning while a memorial tapestry was made. It was largely the work of Yew and Ember, who knew their mother best, but Eugene, who had trained under Brightwork, wove the cloth that Ember dyed, and Winternight, at the time the only member of the shop not from Oakrest, helped Yew with the stitching and resolved himself to learn from their experience and strengthen his own ties with his remaining family. Each of them poured themselves into their work - the narratives of their birthplace and the dragons who had lived there and who live there still, the stories woven into each of their hearts, the skills sewn into their claws, and the regret caused by the dangling threads of tales that will never be completed. When the tapestry was finished, it was hung behind the shop's counter so that it could watch over that which Shula and Brightwork's legacy had built. Many of the store's patrons have commented on its beauty and inquired as to purchasing it, but the dragons who made it find that no price can be placed on memory and refuse to part with it, no matter the sum offered. This cage I can do nothing About the chains But for a time We can walk In sunlight Let me show you The blue sky That stained your hands Last Thursday And the red poppies That wrapped The goddess fair And these peaches Sunrise gold That crack moist Between our teeth As juice drips down our chins Let us laugh Let me walk beside you Under petaled avenues And we will go as far As we may Then rest I will tell you stories As crickets fill The dew Just to watch you Hang On every word I have watched you Watch my hands Nimbly make What you cannot But have you seen How full You make my life?
