When Sornieth was still young and only a few thousand dragons called it home, Maelstrom was claw-picked by the Stormcatcher himself to work as the flight's military strategist. The Stormcatcher graciously set aside a small area in the Highland Scrub for Maelstrom and his mate at the time, Sandy, believing that the combination of their skills would be an invaluable asset to the flight's mission. For many years, their clan remained small, only taking in dragons with skills that would benefit the Stormcatcher's cause. Things took an unfortunate turn, however, when Sandy was called to battle.

Once Sandy had left, Maelstrom spent most of his time alone, rarely taking the time to recruit more clan members. The few dragons that he had found started to leave, and with no new members coming in, the clan slowly began to die. That was until a friendly little Fae named Minnow happened upon the pitiful-looking clan. Despite the deplorable conditions, Minnow decided to stay, and eventually became quite fond of a certain grumpy Nocturne. With enough persistence, Maelstrom eventually returned her affections, with Minnow becoming the clan's new Matriarch soon after. Through her kindness, the clan finally managed to draw in new members (Albeit, not all of them were well suited for the clan's original purpose). With the clan continuing to attract new members to this day, it has since reclaimed its title as one of the strongest military outposts in the Shifting Expanse.

Sandy | Former Mate
Sandy and Maelstrom split up not long after forming their clan. They were mates more out of convenience than actual love, so it was a quick and easy decision. But they're still friendly with one another, well about as friendly as two of Sornieth's grumpiest dragons can be, anyway.

Minnow | Current Mate
Minnow and Maelstrom get along very well despite being so different. It took a long time, but Maelstrom now considers Minnow to be his closest friend, and is one of the few dragons he's willing to have long, in-depth conversations with.

Breezey | Adoptive Daughter
Breezey really gave her adoptive parents a run for their money as a hatchling. Although Maelstrom loves her very much, the two of them butt heads quite often. He just wishes she'd calm down and take things more seriously every now and again.

Voltaire | Guardian
Voltaire claimed Maelstrom as his charge despite MANY protests. Maelstrom isn't very fond of Voltaire, as he finds his arrogance aggravating. Voltaire can't really take a hint, however, and constantly tries to impress him to no avail.

Maelstrom is well renowned as one of the most gifted minds in the Shifting Expanse, known not only for his military endeavors, but also his expertise in subjects such as science and math. Unfortunately, however, he is far from gifted when it comes to socializing. Maelstrom is famous for his grumpy, uninviting nature, and is more comfortable spending time alone than with other dragons. Although you'd never get him to admit he's bad at something, Maelstrom has next to no concept of social cues or norms.

Maelstrom really does care for his family and clan, though, his pride and obliviousness just get in the way of expressing it most of the time. Many of his clan members can't see past this, however, and see him as strict, intimidating, and cold. But Minnow is one of the few dragons who know the truth. She knows that beneath that prickly outer shell lies an honest, caring dragon, albeit an awkward one. He's simply an introverted guy, which means that he just needs his space sometimes and doesn't always know the best way to communicate with others. But if dragons actually took the time to look past that gruff exterior, they'd find a quiet, intelligent individual who always tries his best to steer his clan mates right (even if he accidentally acts like a jerk sometimes).
