Falling
▬▬▬▬▬▬

She was nothing.

She was dust and light, sparkling in the night sky amongst many others. She was not special, not the smallest or largest, not the brightest or faintest. But she was a star, so she supposed that meant she was special in her own way. She watched over the world, the chaotic, busy world, and slowly fell in love with it.

It showed her a life full of passion, full of movement, and she thought that it was a heaven of its own, compared to her mundane life.

When she was a star, she saw the wall that separated the poor village and the magical clan. She saw those who tried to pass it, those who failed, and one who succeeded: a dragon of the village.

She saw him fall for a princess, and she saw him forced to leave, and she saw later the egg —his egg— that was delivered to him by the guardians of the wall. The egg that contained the magic and blood of both worlds. It was an interesting life, she suspected, that the hatchling inside would live. But she thought nothing of it. The saga was over.

After such dramatic events, the world seemed to mellow out, and she stayed in a fixed state of boredom until years later, when the leader of the magical clan was on his deathbed. In his claws he held a necklace, a simple one made from spider silk with a precious gem imbedded in the pendant. With the remaining strength he had left, he pried out the gem and spoke his last words to his sons:

"The one who finds this gem will be the next to lead the clan."

Those were the last words she heard. For the gem had been tossed into the sky, and it passed the border between the world and the heavens, and she was struck.

They fell.

And then she could no longer see the world.

She could see around her, yes, the soft grass in the meadow of the magical clan that she had often seen from above. But she could not see any further; she was no longer omnipotent, able to see all. She felt naked despite being covered in jewels and silks. She was a dragon now. Not a star, but a dragon, a Skydancer.

She was absolutely and completely vulnerable.

So she did not know that, on the other side of the wall, a dragon had seen her fall. Not just any dragon, but the child from both worlds, the child with a magical mother and a commoner father. Only he was no longer a child; he was an adult dragon.

There was a female dragon with whom he was madly in love, though she did not quite share the feeling. When he saw the fallen star, he vowed to retrieve it, to bring it back to her and have her fall for him as well.

She was curled up in the meadow, scared and wary, the gem in her claws, when he approached.

They quickly figured things out: that he was from the village (which she already knew), and that she was the star he sought after. At first, she felt kindly towards him. He, too, was a Skydancer, and his scales looked almost just like hers, as if perhaps this meeting was meant to be.

All thoughts of such things faded when he chained her up, meaning to bring her to his love.

They traveled. They talked; she was cold at first, feeling unreasonably betrayed, but eventually the warmed up to him.

And on the journey... somehow, somehow, she fell for him.

And he fell back.

So when she slept, he left to cross the wall, to go to his old infatuation and inform her that he was no longer going to go after her, and they parted as friends. As he returned, she awoke and found him gone. Had he left her for his old love? It must be.

She left, broken.

In the meantime, unbeknownst to her, the clan leader's youngest son had killed his other brothers, and was searching for the gem. He had seen her with it and set a trap for her, waiting, watching.

As she walked, she thought about him, thought about what she had seen as a star. She knew the clan leader's sons were all bloodthirsty, all ambitious. It would ruin the clan if any of them came to power. She could not let them have the gem.

But then who?

The answer came to her: the princess's son. The princess's son. Him.

She needed to get the gem to him.

Distracted, she ran straight into the trap: a badly made thing, just a hole covered with netting. But her wings were tangled now and she could not fly.

"Give me the gem," said the youngest son to her. "Just give me the gem and you will get away free."

But she couldn't, she couldn't. She clutched it close to her chest and shook her head. He advanced, teeth bared, closer and closer...

And then a purple-blue-green blur shot through the sky and bowled over the bloodthirsty prince and he ripped the netting off her wings and she was free, free, free...

It was him. He hadn't left her after all...

She couldn't speak for all the emotions choking her. As he snapped the neck of the prince, she thrust the gem into his claws, and it began to glowing a bright, enchanting red.

"You are the leader," she said to him, "the king."

He looked at her, fiddling with the glowing gem. Finally, he responded:

"Only if you will be my queen."

And so she was. They ruled over the kingdom with fair claws for years upon years, until it was time for them to pass on the crown to their child. And so she took him into the sky with her, breaching once again the border between the heavens and the earth, and they landed together in the stars.
