STORY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Some say he rose out of the darkness spiralling - shivering - at the edges of silvery puddles of moonlight. Born of the coiling mists and inky black of the Woods. They say he stepped out of the shadows one brisk evening and gave his sight as payment to his goddess in exchange for her darkest powers and he wears the skull of a deity to conceal his ruined eyes. Venin knows better, but doesn't speak of his past; preferring to keep his misdeeds behind him, separate from this family he's been talked into. As clan leader, he was awfully anti-social, letting Denara handle the community. More of a manager than anything else; and when Kieri took over, the transition was seamless. He still offers guidance to those brave enough to seek him out, or even the occasional pointer to those curious about his rather specific skill-set. But he’s remained just as withdrawn and quiet as before, his presence something felt rather than seen.

In his early - solitary - travels, Venin accrued a reputation for efficiency and stealth when it comes to taking out a target or enemy. Many assume that because of his sketchy past, he's violent and uncaring. This is not the case; he's simply brusque and awful at conveying niceties (he doesn't talk about his feelings, ever). The evidence of his secret kindness lingers in the bones of his familiar, Calamus. The Bone Fiend is blindly loyal to him, shadowing his every movement. No one in the clan is quite sure where the unsettling creature was found or what Venin did to ensure it's fidelity. It simply is; never far from Venin, eyeing others with that kind of creepy red gaze. They are both equally silent and stubborn - a match made in the Droolpit, as Bereave would say. And maybe they are. Venin does wear a bone necklace. They figure it's a mark of solidarity.

He can be impatient, easily exasperated and unintentionally rude, but he's always grudgingly willing to lend an ear when necessary and never takes his ire out on those in his care. For, despite his initial unwillingness to begin a clan (and that he is no longer their leader, thankfully), he still considers their safety his responsibility – they are his family – and Venin is ruthless to those who would harm them. Since handing over his leadership role, he seems to have fallen back on old habits. Sometimes he simply cannot be found within the lair, perhaps taking contracts from other clans or following his own path; something he has been trying to do since Denara found him. When in battle, he's vicious and without mercy, knowing full well that survival is often at someone else's expense. He sees himself as a bit of an outcast and will take pity on those like him who have been forgotten, abandoned or beset by misfortune. This clan of misfits he was somehow shanghaied into leading was based around the principle of accepting those cast out of other places; those unwanted souls with nowhere to go.

He knows what it means to be different, to be feared, suspected of vague wrongdoings. There are many in the clan who he holds great empathy for and offers solidarity to, Serendipity most notably among them. Venin will not deny others the second chance Denara offered him. While eyeless, Venin can indeed use the shadows of his homeland to navigate, they talk to him in whispers, tell him things about the souls of strangers. At first, some murmured about his fitness to lead with such a disability. They no longer do. Even now that Kieri has taken his place as leader (much to his relief) he is still fierce in his defense of his denmates. They are still his and he is theirs. Always.

OTHER
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ORIGIN / No one knows where Venin comes from all anyone knows is that he’s old, from a time back when Sornieth was new and dragons had not yet claimed every region as their own. Back when the deities still interacted with their creations, when the Heralds of dragonkind were born from the glittering essence of the elements, powerful and unstoppable beings that drew others to them like iron filings. There are stories about those dragons – about Venin – folk tales and daydreams mostly. But what if they were true.

Fact / Venin is a master poisoner; since he stepped down as clan leader, he’s had more time for the practice. His mixtures are some of the best poisons around. It’s not well known, but he produces a venom naturally, it collects in glands at the back of his throat which he can utilise when he bites; it can also be used in his poison making. He also produces a sort of natural acid that he can “sweat” out of pores in his feet and hands. While not the most potent of corrosives, it’s enough to cause significant pain and wounds never quite heal right.

Likes / Silence, being left to his own devices, the way shadows shift in the forest. But what he really likes is that Kieri has taken over as leader, she’s a good kid and he isn’t bothered as much anymore.

Dislikes / Being pranked (his daughter still does this a lot, to his dismay), conflict and disturbances to the equilibrium. He also frowns on machinations of the underhanded variety (rich, coming from him) but he prefers to imagine the clan has a decent reputation.

Interests / Just leave him alone. That’s all he wants.
