Curiosity
Warrior

Curiosity is the clan's guard, perpetually standing watch, except when training Markus, sparing with him on the metal beams which criss-cross the shaft that the clan calls home. She hardly speaks, taking her role with the upmost seriousness. She is rumored to be of a knighthood of some sort, living by a strict code of honor.

She does not often speak of her home, simply her quest to find her charge: the sword that she carries at her side, supposedly the mark of the knighthood to which she belongs.

Despite her profession, armor, and lifestyle, Curiosity is rarely seen fighting. Those who have, though, say that it is a sight to behold. Her fighting customs hint at her possible knight-like status, as she fights one-on-one, battling with honor and precision through her heavy armor.

Curiosity stood watch outside the entrance to the clan, standing just outside of the cave entrance, a few steps away from shelter as she watched through the tumultuous winds and crackling thunder. She watched the Carrion Canyon, scanning for any sign of movement or possible trouble.

"I'm ready."

Curiosity turned her head to see Markus standing behind her, in the shadow of the cave. The imperial stood expectantly, holding a wooden practice sword in his jaws. "I want to be like you," he continued. "I want to be a knight, or whatever you are."

"That's not something that you would want to take lightly," Curiosity responded. "I want to be something more than my parents, doing menial labor." Markus spoke.

"So, when do I start?" he asked impatiently. Curiosity did not respond, simply returning to scanning the opposite side of the canyon. "Curiosity," Markus whined.

"I know that you've wanted to do this for a long time," Curiosity finally began, speaking deliberately and impartially. "This profession is not for the faint of heart. It demands the very best of oneself, at the expense of one's faults and pleasures. You will have to pay a very high price, Markus, but you can learn. I can see your eagerness."

Markus fidgeted, his eyes sparking with excitement. He loosened and tightened his jaws, repositioning the wooden sword in his mouth. "Do I start now?" he asked expectantly.

"Yes," Curiosity said sternly, "you're training begins now." She stiffened slightly as she spoke, shifting her own holstered sword, a badge of honor. "You will stand guard with me, here."
"For how long?" Markus asked, expectantly, clenching the sword in his teeth as a sinking feeling seeped into his stomach.

Markus stood at the edge of the cave, not quite sure what to do. The wind that whipped through the canyon would surely sting his eyes, and he wondered how long Curiosity would make him stand there. But, this was something that he had wanted for a long time. Markus wanted to be something more, wanted a strict purpose filled with honor and the most sacred duty of protection, not ore gathering like his parents or sitting in front of a hot, stinging pig iron, overseeing the bessemer process, like his brother.

Markus stepped out of the shadow of the cave, coming up to Curiosity's right shoulder. He watched her, expectantly, for a while, half-expecting her to make some remark about the importance of honor or battling one-on-one. But she didn't, so Markus placed his dummy sword onto the rocky ground below his claws, and looked out in front of him, watching the canyon wall.

If he concentrated on a certain ledge, he could swear that his legs didn't ache as much.
