Leroy

Strange as it seems for such a big creature, Leroy is a master at working with all kinds of wax. His beautiful hand-dipped candles are incredibly popular, but also incredibly hard to get ahold of, because candles are Leroy's Charge. He only gives them away to those he finds worthy of them, or to those he feels the candle was meant for. He'll sometimes approach a stranger and hand them a candle without a word; this is regarded as good luck or a sign of things to come among members of the clan.

Leroy's relationship with his Charge is something of a mystery to the other guardians in the clan. None of them quite understand how he's willing to just give his Charge away and let it be burnt by its recipient; some even scorn him by what could pass for betraying his Charge, or pity him for having such an impossible Charge to care for. Leroy doesn't mind and doesn't care. What good is a candle if it isn't used? He can't just lock them all away and never let anyone burn them again. Then they wouldn't be candles. By ensuring they go to the right owners, he is helping them live out their natural "lifespan." just like a guardian with an actually living charge would do.

To the surprise of nearly everyone, Leroy and Iah have become fast friends; Leroy often watches as Lyra and Iah train together, and Iah can sometimes be found visiting Leroy's workshop. Leroy's unusual and ephemeral Charge has given him an interesting perspective on the nature of Charges, which in turn has helped him console the confused skydancer. Long talks with Leroy are slowly helping Iah come to terms with losing his instincts and never knowing his Charge. Lyra often brings back rare plants for dye and fragrance, or samples of wax and tallow for Leroy to use in his craft, as a kind of unspoken thanks for helping her look after her friend.
