HISTORY
As an Arcane hatchling, Alberge dreamed of becoming a great mage. He was blessed with extraordinary power, but unfortunately he lacked the willingness to control it. His teachers, seeing that he was more reckless than responsible, refrained from teaching him more advanced spells. Nevertheless, Alberge's power grew, and it soon brought him to the attention of the Disillusionists, who were looking for Arcane Representative candidates. Alberge came to the lair as a youngster, and though the Disillusionists did their best to train him, they, too, found themselves unable to dampen his overconfidence. They began looking for new candidates, and Alberge was trained in the ways of combat instead.

Alberge was crushed when he was relegated to guard duty, whereas the younger Jubilant was given the mantle of Arcane Ambassador. Although he went along with the instructions civilly enough, he began nursing a deep hatred for his clan. It was at this time that the Shade took an interest in him. Its influence clouded Alberge's mind -- his temper might have cooled in time, but the Shade fanned it, whispering to him that he deserved to be more than just a lowly guard. As the years passed, Alberge's magical strength grew -- and so did the Shade's control over him. He eventually came to the point where he understood what was controlling him, but was too far gone to care.

It was in the Hewn City that things came to a head: the Shade spurred Alberge to unleash his power. To mock the Arcane Ambassador's strength, the Imperial levitated the entire lair into the sky. He didn't know it, but he would eventually lose control -- and the Shade hoped that the magical backlash that resulted from the lair's destruction, and the death of its inhabitants, would spread enough turmoil for it to take control of other dragons.

The Arcane Ambassador and the rest of the Disillusionists proved stronger, however. They had help from allied clans within the Sunbeam Ruins as well. Together, they confronted Alberge, who had by then discerned the Shade's true plans. With their help, Alberge was able to purge the Shade from his mind. The lair settled safely near the Beacon of the Radiant Eye.

Alberge was a different dragon after that incident, and for the better. Freed from the Shade's control, he lost much of his rage and began to understand what others had been trying to teach him all along: that his power, no matter how great, was useless while unchecked. Although he continues serving the clan as a guard, he has also gone back to learning how to better control his magic. The Shade is still a sore point for him, but he is warier of it now, and is willing to counsel dragons who fear they might be straying down the same path.

CHARACTER
Both Alberge's intelligence and magical strength were evident from an early age. He received a lot of praise for these, and as a result, he grew up with incredibly high expectations for himself -- not to mention an undeservedly high opinion of himself. He decided that there was no need to control his magic and often wouldn't listen to reason. His disregard for rules caused other dragons to view him as dangerous, but he chose to misinterpret their fear of him, believing instead that they were in awe of his magic.

He was deeply frustrated and enraged during his first years with the Disillusionists. After he was denied the position of Arcane Ambassador, he began viewing his clanmates with disdain, seeing them as fools who were incapable of appreciating his genius. No one could have guessed the depths of his anger, for during this time, he was always coolly civil. Still, his aloof demeanor made him unpopular with other dragons, and his clanmates began to shun him. For a time, he thought he had a henchdrake in Metalicana, but even the Guardian started avoiding him when he became more unstable. His loneliness fuelled his rage, and it became easy for the Shade to sink its darkness into him.

He was unaware at first that he was being manipulated by the Shade. It captured him with promises of glory and heroism -- and Alberge was later appalled to realize that its plans actually included the entire clan's demise. The intervention of other dragons, particularly his former rival, helped him break free of the Shade's influence, and he was deeply humiliated to realize that he'd allowed himself to be deceived for so long. He was grateful for the clan's willingness to give him a second chance and began giving more thought to using his magic responsibly.

Without the Shade's influence, Alberge became a lot more agreeable. He remains aloof, so many dragons find themselves intimidated by him. He is reserved and seldom speaks or smiles. His experiences with the Shade have made him very cautious, and he is always unsure about accepting praise: he tends to dismiss compliments or just brush them aside.

His confrontation with the Shade made him fairly well-known, and dragons sometimes visit him to interview him or ask for advice. Alberge dislikes talking about his time as the Shade's lackey, but will open up if he feels others are struggling with the same problems. Like most of his clanmates, he is now staunchly anti-Shade and will do all he can to oppose it. His attempts at counseling are clumsy but sincere, and he will always make time for these meetings.

He spends most of his waking hours on guard duty, and if there are no pressing matters at hand, he will often work overtime. He gets along better with his clanmates now, but is still hesitant to think of himself as their friend. More often than not, he spends his free time alone, studying or (very, very carefully) practicing his magic.

RELATIONSHIPS
26635401p.png Jubilant | Former Rival
Alberge once regarded the Arcane Ambassador as his bitterest enemy. It was Jubilant who proved to be his strongest ally in the fight against the Shade, however, and while they aren't exactly friends now, Alberge has a newfound respect for him and accepts him as the clan's true Arcane Representative.
25504398p.png Metalicana | Colleague
Like Alberge, Metalicana once held a deep hatred for the clan. Later encounters with other beings convinced him that he was a lot more fortunate than he'd thought, and he soon distanced himself from Alberge. They still do guard duty together at times, but their relationship is more cordial, and they will not speak to each other of the mistakes they made before.

STATS & ABILITIES
combat1-9.png
A well-trained fighter, as any lair guard should be. Alberge relies on agility rather than strength, able to use both weapons and his natural abilities. His magic, while powerful, remains difficult to control, and he will use it only as a last resort.
_______________________________________
vitality1-9.png
Although he is calm and silent most of the time, Alberge possesses an incredibly strong will. His resilience has helped him bounce back from many mishaps, particularly his encounter with the Shade.
_______________________________________
magic1-6.png
Alberge missed plenty of opportunities when he neglected his early lessons. In the future, he might become a very powerful mage, but his magic remains largely untried, and he is still struggling to learn how to control it. His fear of causing an accident means he doesn't often use his abilities.
_______________________________________
intelligence1-6.png
Having neglected many of his studies as a child, there are large gaps in Alberge's knowledge. Most of the lessons that stuck in his mind are centered on basic magic; he is more knowledgeable about physical combat. He now studies more diligently, but may find himself unable to discourse about many topics, such as history or literature.
_______________________________________
charisma1-3.png
A difficult dragon to talk to, not because he is purposely rude, but because he isn't a natural converser. He doesn't dislike other dragons, but finds it difficult to make friends. He does make special efforts for dragons he's counseling, and fortunately, more often than not, his sincere concern shines through.
_______________________________________
luck1-4.png
Considering what he's been through, Alberge is ridiculously lucky, though he might argue, with some reason, that this is due to other dragons' decisions. He has had enough excitement to last him a lifetime and now mostly devotes his time to keeping his head down.
