Asaph
Collector

"Collecting is nothing but an
object possessing the possessor."

Asaph is a somber dragon whose wings have been blessed by the Lightweaver herself so he may travel vast distances in the never ending search for knowledge and truth. His only passion is expanding the horizons of his mind, and he pursues this end feverishly. With his unnaturally strong, glowing wings, Asaph soars across the lands in the hope of finding ancient relics or interviewing theorists. He often brings back as many treasures as he can carry- dusty tomes, cracked tablets with hieroglyphics of some dead language, faded portraits from another era. (Librarians and scholars love Collectors, because although they are mostly concerned with their own pursuit of knowledge, they are more than willing to show off what they've found on their latest excursion.)

Because his wings are made strong with the Lightweaver's magic, Asaph tends to travel for extended periods of time gathering interesting items and tidbits along the way- he will disappear from his clan for months at a time before returning with a veritable mountain of artifacts.

Although Collectors generally only care about expanding their knowledge base, a rare few find mates. These mates are practically always other Collectors, because almost no one else can bear their wanderlust and fanatical raving about this moldy book or that chipped enameled vase.

Asaph tends to be a bit morose concerning anything other than their pursuit of knowledge. His is also rather easily distracted by anything that looks shiny, old, or just interesting. It is rare to have a Asaph’s full attention, so appreciate it if you manage to get it.

Asaph is also generally very solitary and quiet (unless you ask about that crumbling statue he found), which many dragons interpret as snobbishness. This doesn’t really bother Asaph or other Collectors, as it has no impact on their never-ending search.

Because he tends to be absorbed in his hunt for treasures, Asaph often forgets to eat on a regular basis. When he finally realizes when he's hungry, he’ll eat whatever happens to be easiest to obtain - he’ll eat almost anything and is very resourceful. Even in harsh areas with little for nourishment, Asaph can find something to hold him over until he can find a more satisfying meal.

Asaph often has a stash of magical objects with him at all times that can be used offensively or defensively in battle. He also has an arsenal of Light magic, which is assumed to be a side effect of his blessed wings. But although he can handle himself well in combat, Asaph, and most other Collectors, tend to avoid conflict if possible.

Asaph knows that the risk of the Hewn City is high and avoids searching within that region. Every now and then, the temptation and possibility of what could lie within will be too much to bear for him and he will venture inside. Once inside, the City's dark energies will begin to seep into him. This happens slowly at first - giving Asaph a false sense of peace. With the dangers apparently overstated, the poor dragon will eventually return, again and again. With each visit, the Hewn City will sink its dark claws in deeper until Asaph becomes obsessed with finding every artifact possible, unaware of the tainting of his own body. Once his wings begin to darken, it will be too late.

Once Faxandra learned this awful truth, she made sure that Asaph always took another dragon with him on his travels, to keep him from going too close to the Hewn City.
