M E R A K

Merak is flamboyant in every sense of the word. He never hesitates to express himself, especially through melodrama and dancing. He lightens the mood everywhere he goes; even when he isn't doing anything, he has an aura of joy and passion that's positively infectious. He usually avoids angering others as much as he can, but if someone offends him or someone he cares about, he won't hesitate to snap back with an insult. He never engages in physical violence, though anyone that's gotten on his bad side knows his tongue is twice as sharp as any sword. He's slow to anger but even slower to forgive.

On the rare occasion that someone actually physically attacks him, Merak never bothers trying to fight back. Instead he'll resort to dodging and running. He does his best to nettle his opponent as much as possible while he flees, both to entertain any bystanders and to get his own form of revenge. Since hurling insults technically isn't illegal, Merak always escapes such altercations scot-free.

Nobody's sure what Merak does, exactly. He's showy enough that most would expect him to be an actor, but he and Nalani aren't on the greatest of terms. Besides, he spurns stage acting as "pretentious" and "outdated." Instead, once every other month (or sooner if something interesting has happened), he'll host a large, public event and share the Coven's latest news in the form of a dramatic monologue. His spiels are so ridiculous and over the top that they often draw the majority of his clanmates out to watch, even the solitary and humorless ones. Proceeds from these events are presumably Merak's main source of income. He's also been known to go on lengthy public rants when the fancy strikes him; the more interesting ones earn him a small fortune in tips, as well as a wealth of publicity.

One subject the coatl is strangely silent about is his extended family. No one's sure who his parents are, if he has any siblings, or even where he came from. He just moved in one day and that was that. Noel presumably has some idea since she took care of Merak's immigration paperwork, but no one cares enough to ask her about it.

Merak's nuclear family is another story entirely. He'll go on for literal hours about how gorgeous his wife is, or how beautiful their children are. Most dragons are smart enough to change the subject when he starts rambling; those that aren't get to hear all about the showman's loved ones in vivid, boring detail.

Merak has an odd fascination with dead birds. His home is filled with an ever-growing collection of bones, skulls, and feathers, each of which is lovingly labeled and preserved. And he wonders why the clan's talonok avoid him.
