"We were never meant to be together, were we?" He had avoided meeting her gaze all this while, but now, he finally turned towards her, and she saw that his eyes - those beautiful, brown, soulful eyes - were glistening. Past the tears, she could see betrayal in the way he looked at her, and it hurt her so much knowing that she could never give him the explanation that he deserved. The love between them had been real. It felt like nothing she had ever experienced before - the rush she got when she was with him, the ache she felt in her heart whenever they were apart, the way he was always on her mind. The half-hearted relationships she had had with others before him was nothing more than a speck of dust compared to this. She was certain that she was in love with him - and he with her - but sometimes, more is needed than simply love for a relationship to last. "... It almost feels like a dream, you know?" Her thoughts suddenly tuned in to his voice. "Almost as if none of this ever happened." He let out a bitter laugh, and although there was laughter etched on his face, she knew him well enough to know that behind his smile was grief. She so desperately wished that she could voice out her innermost desires, to tell him that it broke her heart just as much as it had broken his to say that she had never loved him. She wanted nothing more than to tear down the web of lies she had woven, to break down the walls of deception that she had been forced to build. Oh, if only it had been a dream. His gaze, which had been locked onto her all this while, suddenly faltered, and he placed a hand on her cheek, like he used to do before. Gently, he carressed her cheek, whispering sweet nothings as he traced his fingers over the outline of her cheekbones, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear when it fell in front of her eyes. Her vision blurred, and she didn't try to hold back as a single pearl-shaped tear gathered at the corner of her eye, leaving a wet track as it rolled down her cheek. His hand was there in a flash, wiping away the tear as quickly as it had formed, and before she knew what was happening, he drew her in for a kiss, his lips warm and soft on hers. She kissed him back, relishing the intensity of the love that she felt for him - the intensity that had in fact, always been there. When they broke away, he gripped her shoulders with firm hands, his gaze filled with nothing but seriousness. "It's not our fate to be together, but promise me one thing: that you'll stop time when this moment passes, and remember me as I am. Then hold your head high and never look back. Treat this like it never happened, and maybe one day, we'll meet again." If only he knew. |
