Biography

Penumbra
Bursting with Secrets
Commander of Covert Assignments | Workaholic | Chameleon
Loyalty: Herself

"The best kind of secrets are well-kept. They're the ones I have the most fun unfurling."

Don't be fooled by the jewellery and the poise, there's a very distinct reason why Penumbra bears the title of Commander of Covert Affairs. Her sly smile and her species' natural aptitude for mimicry has served the Nocturne many a time. An accomplished undercover agent, Penumbra has managed to topple young rulers and steal treasured secrets, all whilst maintaining a perfect facade and reputation.

Oftentimes, she cannot be found at Verglas Shores, coming home only in two occasions. The first is when Bukharin commands it, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, when most of what she has discovered comes into play for deciding the course of action for the lair. Though she has no particular fondness for the Imperial, he gives her enough freedom to keep her content. The second is when she manages to find a break in her schedule to be with Sima, her partner.

Theia has tried asking her to take a greater role in leadership, but to no avail, except for training the most promising of emissaries, Argus, a role which Penumbra revels in, believing in the possibility of the perfect successor. That said, nothing thrills Penumbra quite as much as her profession, and she has no plans of slowing down. Espionage, after all, allows her to feel more like herself by being someone else, whoever that may be.

History

Penumbra was born into a wealthy family deep within the Tangled Wood. By a young age, she had already been trained in poise and etiquette, fashioned in such a way that her species' natural aptitude for mimicry would allow her to blend seamlessly in high societies around Sornieth. From her carers, she learned how the simpler class lived and soon would wander around the estate imitating the habits and the details of the servants and the citizens. It was all a game, of course, until she discovered the power of a well-revealed secret.

Her uncle, one of her father's many brothers, had been exposed as a spy for the Inquisition of Light, considered especially treacherous within the territory dedicated to the Shadowbinder. With his secrets revealed, he had been sacrificed to the goddess, and though a number of dragons had shed tears, Penumbra had never really liked her uncle, and her eyes sparkled not with saltwater, but with a distinct gleam of someone who had found her purpose.

It started out small. She would relay notes of the general populace to her parents, who would raise slight grins at their daughter's discoveries, not really paying any mind to the day's adventures. Until she found out the bookkeeper was taking a cut from the lair's earnings and that two soldiers were planning desertion and that her mother's pearl necklace had been separated into fourteen stones. She had listed those who held the stones in alphabetical order.

Finally seeing her potential, her father had sent her to live as an apprentice in a rival's lair. She was to act slowly and not raise suspicion, but her newfound ambition got the best of her. She took on too much and got caught. Though sufficient explanations could be brought up and her head did not have to be impaled, Penumbra had to pay the price for her recklessness in some way. As she tread her path to the Southern Icefields in exile, she vowed never to make another mistake. And she never did.

In the Southern Icefields, she was sent to a lair that had long maintained relations with her home. There, she was welcomed into the court as a visitor and soon recommenced her vocation. Old habits die hard, after all. It did not take long for her to discover the most dire of plots - one to overthrow the clan's rulers and murder their daughter. Penumbra had tried to alert them, but they did not heed her warnings. When the revolution came about, the Nocturne mixed in with the restless crowd and disappeared.

When she found out Theia had survived and set up stead at Verglas Shores, she appeared openly to offer her services. The Guardian had been unaware of Penumbra's prowess, but Florence had heard enough about her capabilities to realise how much of an asset she could be. And the old Coatl had always been prone to whispering in Theia's ears. From then on, Penumbra began her work for Verglas Shores, under Florence and later Bukharin's close scrutiny. Most in the lair have no idea of Penumbra's importance. She believes that's the best compliment there is - it means she's doing her job right. And there's nothing she loves more than a job well done.
