History
Valmai came from deep within the Labyrinth, from the roots of the Behemoth itself. The forest was gorgeous and he blended in beautifully to the foliage, but the horizon called him from a young age. He didn't travel for long before meeting Serakem , Rauken, and their rag-tag group. Though it was more dangerous than settling in an already established clan, Valmai decided to join them and help them look for a home. Thusly, he became one of The Dome's founding members.
It was tough starting out, especially since they numbered so few, so he quickly found himself training to fight alongside Shard and Seafoam. He had not expected to become a fighter when he was young so of the three he had the most difficult part adjusting to the training, but Shard and Seafoam were always patient with him and supportive of his needs so the trio ended up working very well together.
Once the clan had built itself up, the task once again fell to him to train, though this time he was teaching new fighters. Shard was much too anxious to be in a teaching role and Seafoam was at that time Light Mage, so neither of them would have been suitable to the role. He doubted himself a lot at first - could he really teach others when he had struggled so much? - but his recruits liked him and looked up to him and flourished, so he figured he must have been doing something right. For a time, he had Aphrodite as his training partner after the Ridgeback arrived fresh off the Farm. Her aggressive attacks melded with his more shadowy tactics made for a strong, intelligent style passed on to the new generations.
As the clan grew and more capable fighters settled in, he slowly retired from teaching and focused on himself and his family, leaving the training to more impressive and (in his opinion) more capable dragons. He spent a lot of time with Varys instead, as well as his mate at the time, though his connection to his son was always the stronger of the two. He liked watching Varys grow and carve his own path into the world, as well as preparing some of his other children for their own lives outside the clan. A few settled in allied clans, so he was happy to be able to visit them whenever he could.
After Varys' death, it took a long time for him to get back on his feet. His latest mate had left as well, so he was left alone in his cave for days before one of his old friends checked up on him and dragged him outside for a few brief minutes of fresh air. He didn't appreciate the disruptions at the time, though afterwards he made sure to thank them profusely.
It was Scarlett who approached him with the proposition. The clan could use a specialized fighting team to work within the Golem Workshop, honing their skills while also farming for useful food and trinkets in the area. She had volunteered, along with Shinku who was to be the designated healer and mage. Intrigued and lacking anything better to do, Valmai agreed. Part of him also hoped that it would be a nice distraction for his loss. He was correct in that, and he also ended up gaining two close friends out of the situation.
Personality
Valmai soom showed himself to be a responsible, resourceful dragon. He could keep working at a problem until he found a solution, no matter how impossible it seemed, and he had quick reflexes that more than once saved someone's hide. At the same time, he also had seemingly endless patience and an open mind that lent well to developing the inter-dragon structures of the fledgling clan.
Still, he constantly struggled with maintaining the image of professionalism and looking like he knew what he was doing. He'd been one of the starting members, he had to set an example! He had always been on the quieter and more reserved side, so being thrust into situations like initially training to fight, and then training others was hard for him to adjust to. He had to come out of his shell a lot and very quickly at the beginning, which came with a lot of stress to him. Eventually he adjusted and everything worked out fine, but it was a lot of pressure to put on a young dragon. Others soon learned to give him at least a few days warning before he was needed for something big and/or strenuous, and that he would also need a few days to just rest and keep to himself after the task.
Facts
- As much stress as it causes him, he likes being useful to the clan and usually is happy to help out with whatever needs doing.
- He's definitely going to try and slow down with just about everything in the future.
- He underwent his transformation after Varys' death; the thought of new colours and genes gave him something to look forward to, and spending time with Seafoam and Serakem helped to make those dark days a little lighter.
- His split with his old mate Tenenbaum was the most amicable; they found that they were better off as friends than mates and he still keeps in touch with her. It was a mutual parting.
- He was the first in the clan to adopt the tradition of flowery fighters from Aphrodite, and he helped spread it to the rest of the knights and warriors.

Relationships
Mate: None
Azura, Eris, Tenenbaum, and Araxie: They were his past mates. He cared for them each very much, but in the end their relationships were simply not meant to last. Either he or they always left. He mourned the first two very much, but after Araxie, he's definitely become a bit more jaded and reserved when it comes to showing his love. He still does his best to look at the future with optimism, but he's been burned too many times to allow himself to love as freely as he did in his youth.
Varys: Valmai's most precious son. He knows it's not quite fair to pick favourites of his living children, but Varys had always been special. Varys stayed at his side and tried so hard to make his father happy. Val had never quite found the words to tell his son how deeply proud of him he was, but he hoped he conveyed the affection enough with his actions. Since the sickness came so swiftly, Valmai was helpless as he watched the life drain from his child. He so desperately wishes he could have had even a few more days with Varys, but what parent doesn't feel that way? He buried Varys himself and makes frequent visits to his son's final resting place to bring new flowers and tidy up. He's also trying to look towards the future as best he can, because he knows it's what Varys would have wanted.
Serakem: He respects Serakem to the utmost and considers her one of his closest and first friends. He was drawn in by her determination and the way she could inspire others to follow her, while at the same time being open and approachable by everyone. He's very glad he joined her small group so many years ago, and wouldn't trade his experiences for anything.
Seafoam: Seafoam became another one of his closest friends after their experiences training together. He's always been impressed by her magical prowess and encouraged her to pursue more knowledge. He knows he can always confide in her and that she won't belittle his problems or think less of him for them.
Shard: His friendship with Shard has always been a little less intimate and more of mutual respect. He knows he can count on her to have his back, but she wouldn't be the first he'd turn to for a more personal chat. That's just the kind of friends they are. He's still very glad that he met her and that he had the privilege of fighting alongside her.
Aphrodite: He and Aph bonded during the time that they trained young fighters together. Though he thought her to be quite aggressive and forward when he first met her, he was pleasantly surprised at how well they ended up getting along. Their paths don't cross as often anymore, but he's always happy to exchange a few words with her whenever they do bump into each other.
Scarlett: Before she came to him with her proposition, Valmai had heard of Scarlett before and was often exhausted just thinking of how high-energy she was. As they fought together, however, he came to know how she was always ready to boost him up and listen carefully to his thoughts and issues. He feels like he misjudged her a little bit at the beginning and very much looks forward to seeing how their friendship will deepen.
Shinku: Shinku came to the clan shortly after it was established. Though Valmai had a little bit of a hand in the beginnings of Shin's training, the Imperial soon began to display high levels of magical ability that were beyond Val's scope of training. Shinku soon formed his own party that he trained with and their paths diverged for quite a while. Since they've started fighting together in the Workshop, they've reconnected as friends and developed a much closer bond than before.
