For Patrin:

Patrin visited a reportedly large and well established clan in the Rimebone Stockade, deep in Ice territory. The clan Matriarch was a Gaoler named Skyspeed, and the Patriarch was a Tundra named Romius. When Patrin arrived, the clan was quiet... It turned out that only about 20% of the 600+clan members were ever awake at one time, they rest remained in hibernation. But those of the clan who were awake were quite productive. Echidna, one of the founding members of Skyspeed's clan, was a Guardian in charge of battle training. She had trained more warriors than any other member of the clan, and offered Patrin some basic training, if he desired it.

The clan healer, Numitor, tended to Patrin on his arrival, treating him for exposure to the cold. He gave Patrin a few potions and elixirs to keep. Numitor explained that most of the clan hibernated in order to conserve resources during the longest and coldest months of winter. Numitor gave Patrin a guided tour of the den in order to see some of the other members of the clan. It was a little odd being shown sleeping dragons, who Numitor spoke about like they were exhibition pieces at a museum. In the den, Patrin visited the cave reserved for the best warriors; 16 reserve guards slept. Should the clan ever be attacked, these 16 would wake to defend their home.
