"You will regret crossing swords with me."

He lost his parents and siblings to bandits when traveling through Dragonhome. Indil was gravely wounded and barely survived, dragging himself away from the road before he collapsed. There he was found by a wandering warrior who saw something promising in the young coatl's eyes. She took him in, healed him, and taught him the way of the sword, both a method of combat and a philosophy of protecting others. She considered the sword a more elegant and civilized form of combat than fighting tooth and claw, and under her tutelage, he became quite adept at the art.

They soon quarreled over differences of opinion and parted ways before he could complete his training. He wanted to avenge himself on the bandits who took away his family and to protect others by ridding the world of them; she urged him to overcome his deep hatred of them and finish his spiritual and physical training. He fell in with a pack of mirrors who claimed to know of the bandits and said that they would lead him to them...provided that he use his sword in their service. Having no other leads, he agreed to their condition, though he soon regretted his decision when they had him repeatedly engage in duels with other dragons over perceived slights and for sport. Though his skill ensured that he always won, he grew to hate his traveling companions and longed for the day that they would find the bandits and he could rid himself of their company.

At one inn, his traveling companions ran across a coatl named Eztli making his way to the Stafall Isles with a smaller coatl, Shadow, in tow. The mirrors became enraged when they saw the elder coatl and demanded that Indil kill him, as they claimed he had stolen something that had belonged to them. Eztli gently nudged Shadow back into the crowd before Indil was upon him with his sword, and Ez fended off the other coatl with magic while shouting at the mirrors that dragons were not property and that they had had no right to use Winternight as they had - any more than they had any right to demand Indil's services. Indil doubled his attacks, protesting that they weren't using him - he was providing his skills in exchange for information - but the protests died on his tongue when he realized how long it had been since he had entered the mirror pack's service...more than long enough to have reached the bandits' hideout, but instead the mirrors had drug him around, using him for their own ends. His blows faltered, and finally he lowered his sword before reversing his stance to stare at the deceptive mirrors. Rather than face the wrath of two powerful coatl, they turned tail and fled.

Though each was tempted to pursue the mirrors for their own reasons, instead they submitted their evidence to the local authorities and were satisfied when they mirrors were rounded up and imprisoned on several charges, for once Indil and Eztli had stood against them, others became brave enough to come forward and tell what other crimes the mirrors had committed. Though pleased that at least some criminals had faced justice, Indil was at a loss for where to go next, for he had no more leads on the bandits who had killed his family, and he couldn't bring himself to return and face his teacher. Eztli, sensing the others' confusion, offered him a place on the island of Prufrock while he thought about his next move, promising that they had information specialists who could help him search for those who had wronged him in the past. Though reluctant to stall his search, Indil accepted and followed the two coatl to the Starfall Isles. He refused to train others in the art of the sword, saying that he never completed his own training and therefore wasn't worthy. Instead, he regularly pestered the information specialist Sen for anything she had found regarding the bandits and spent the rest of his time meditating in the gardens.

Though it took Sen a fair amount of time, finally the clever snapper was able to locate the elusive bandits for him, having heard about attacks near her former home. Angered that they were still actively harming others yet elated that he had finally found his foe, he flew to Dragonhome, where he set upon their camp and confronted them. At first they scoffed at the idea that a single dragon could defeat them, though they soon realized his skill and ferociousness and tried to flee. None escaped alive.

Searching through the camp, he found two hatchlings, Splinter and Legend, who had been taken captive by the bandits. Though they were at first terrified of the blood-splattered coatl, he eventually managed to persuade the siblings that he wasn't going to hurt them. After finding out that their parents had been slain when they had been captured, he decided to take them back to Prufrock, where clan founders Emrys and Elyta were happy to adopt them. He has become something like their godfather, and after much pestering, he reluctantly agreed to train Legend as an apprentice.
