He was named for the color of his wings, the deep red of a sun-stained sky, right before the night descends. He had a sister. Like many younglings born in the Starfall Isles, they were deeply curious about the world around them. They always had to investigate, see what this did to that....Investigations meant experiments, and experiments were fun!

As the elder of the two siblings, he was tasked with caring for his sister. Still, it was hard for him to keep both himself and his sister out of trouble. Their curiosity was insatiable, and they were forever poking objects, putting things together, mixing substances and chemicals, and frying the whole mess with magic. It was harmless fun -- and then one day, it wasn't....

The explosion damaged Afterglow quite badly. He was left with a network of raised scars striating his body, lightning-shaped markings that sometimes tore open again if he moved too quickly. It took him weeks to recover; he drifted in and out of a haze. When he finally came out of it, he wished he hadn't. His sister was gone.

He was left badly weakened by the accident. Blamed for his sister's death, for crippling himself, he was thrown out, left to fend for himself. He was not quite grown, but he would survive. He had to.

To hide his strange scars, he shrouded himself in tattered cloaks and robes. He took on menial jobs: slow-paced work that didn't strain his wounded flesh so much. He missed being confident and strong. Perhaps he'd regain more of his strength in the future, but for now, there didn't seem to be much hope....

"Are you all right?"

He hadn't heard those words in a long time. He looked up, and had to squint. Whoever they were, they were quite bright...and dare he said it, radiant....

He found a new home. It might have been because the clan was young and its founders idealistic; they accepted him and his eagerness to work. Despite his initial weakness, they came to rely on him as a sentry. He wore the armor they offered, ignored it as it opened up his scars. It was a welcome change from the discarded tatters he'd worn. It was a mark of the clan's respect for him, and he decided he could endure the discomfort. It was, after all, for only a few hours each night.

His shift starts at dusk. He sheds his blankets and basks in the light of the setting sun. After some time, it slips below the horizon. Afterglow is left to stand vigil, steady and sure, his scars glowing like lamps in the darkness.
