Carves charms from bones. Doesn't usually hunt the creatures herself, but it's rumoured she's got a knack for finding unmarked graves. The bones of the abandoned and forgotten are apparently very strong...

Possibly royalty but doesn't divulge her past to anyone in the clan. One day she just breezed inside with a shovel and started digging on the grounds, carrying a seemingly endless supply of bones into one of the empty houses. She's stayed ever since and nobody questioned it.

To say Annabel got into Aldwick by conventional means would be a lie. Without family ties or application she walked in on a sunny afternoon, ignored Mardell standing guard at the gate, and walked straight to the East square with purpose and a shovel in her hand. The constructs in the streets stood still as ever at her unauthorized and unannounced arrival.

Bewildered people gathered to the square to see what in the Gods’ names was going on. Nobody knew of their new visitor who managed to leave every single one of the constructs supposed to be protecting the grounds from uninvited guests undisturbed. Even invited guests woke the statues.

Annabel paid no attention to any of her onlookers as she moved about the square for a bit before settling on a spot, hands on her hips and nodding to herself firmly once. She used her shovel to scoop out a large area of the stones paving the square and started to dig. Mardell had summoned for Violet, who, after arriving with her usual dramatic robes, stopped anyone trying to get closer to the digging with a curt glance.

Violet looked on with interest as Annabel kept digging.

There were hushed whispers in the long minutes that Annabel dug into the ground. The pile of dirt next to her grew steadily, small rocks rolling back down every time she threw fresh dirt onto the pile.

It didn’t take very long before she unearthed something that wasn’t dirt. First came a small bundle the size of a young child wrapped in cloth she gently put down on the cleanest edge of the hole. Then another bundle, wrapped in the same cloth, but much larger than the first. She tossed the bundle and her shovel over the edge with none of the care she had used for the first bundle and climbed out after them.

Violet finally approached her then.

They stood in front of each other in silence for a good minute while Annabel cleaned the dust from her fingers with a cloth hanging from her belt. “I do have something for you,” Annabel said when she dropped the cloth and opened the pouch hanging from her belt on her other hip.
She pulled out something wrapped in black cloth and held it out, waiting for Violet to hold up her hand so she could place it in her palm gently.
“I hope it suffices.”

The matriarch hummed as she unwrapped the cloth, revealing a knuckle engraved with runes. It hummed with strong, strange magic. She glanced up at Annabel briefly before delicately wrapping the bone in the cloth again and tucking it into her belt. “What’s your name?” She asked.

“Annabel.”

“Would you like to stay? I’m sure we can come to an arrangement.”

“That was the idea.”

Violet chin turned to her shoulder slightly and she spoke to Mardell just behind her. “Please escort Annabel to the empty residence on the South road. Make sure she knows where everything is.”

Aldwick’s lone guard didn’t hesitate to step forward but didn’t look very pleased about it. The task given wasn’t exactly in his job description of guarding the estate and the surrounding town.

When he moved to pick up the bundles on the cobblestones next to the freshly dug hole in their previously very tidy square Annabel quickly darted under him to snag up the smaller bundle. She smiled crookedly at him after she’d straightened back up. “No touching,” she told him. The small bundle cradled in the crook of her arm like a newborn.

Mardell suppressed the urge to sigh deeply and started towards the South road with the other bundle resting on his shoulder, Annabel following closely.

“Someone clean this up, hmm?” Violet spoke to the still confused crowd. “Looks to me like none of you have important matters to attend to if you’ve got time to stare.”
She turned on her heel, not back to the manor she came from before but heading towards the ruins with urgency.
