Genes Needed: Crystal/Alloy/Capsule

Read, write, learn, repeat
He, who only ever knew defeat
Train and train and train some more
Strike at the weakness, at the core
Ignore the pain, the bruises, and blood
Ignore the armor covered in mud
He, who cannot best his brother still
In war, in love, not even in will
Outshined, outbested, outclassed
Never the first, only the last
Read, write, learn, repeat
He, who only ever knew defeat

"I would appreciate it if you would forego mentioning my brother."

-- to Paragon when Lucien first arrived

"Mmm. And I suppose that mess will need cleaning up too. Honestly, Paragon, you know I love it when you paint and draw and write, but keeping your tools organised is just as important too."

-- quote by: shanncrafter
I live to serve you
Dignity and justice reigns
Where is my lover

haiku by: Officer

Strict and stern
The rulebook always in hand
Protective and strong
A sword always in hand
You wear your armor like a second skin
And bare your heart to the savage winds
And why
For the love of a girl already taken?
To be better than another?
You are so much more than them
A knight in shining armor
Justice in gleaming black and white
A tender soul wrapped in ebony steel

Everyone seeks approval, some more than most.

Radric was born a disappointment, no matter how much he tried to prove otherwise. When his whole clan had disappeared without a trace, he set out to find them.

In his travels, he met Paragon. And he'd never left her side since.

Ever loyal, Radric saw to all her needs before she even knew what they were. Winning her affections had become his new goal. Unfortunately, Radric's efforts are constantly misconstrued as acts of kindness and friendship. Not deterred, he believes that one day Paragon will see his intentions clearly.

Unfortunately for him, things took a turn for the worse at the arrival of his hated rival and brother. Especially when said brother set his sights on the same female... Clan members agree that their lair had seen better days...

Radric holds a severe dislike for his brother, Lucien.

He is very strict and always goes by the book. He prides himself in his loyalty to Paragon and his vast knowledge about most things. He pushes himself to his limits in hopes that one day he can surpass his older brother. He does not take jokes well. Due to constant comparisons, he is very insecure about his abilities.

He is also a clean freak. Something that Paragon finds strange, but endearing... but sometimes it's just purely annoying.

He prefers to be realistic and logical, but often comes across as pessimistic.

He's very traditional and is fascinated by history. If he hadn't felt the need to match up to his brother, he would've preferred to be a teacher or a librarian... or a healer.

He's usually seen accompanying Paragon. When asked, he'd say that he was trying to keep certain pests away (Lucien). He dislikes the fact that his brother and Paragon seem to have been getting closer despite his interference.

”You know, not mentioning your brother isn’t going to make him go away!” Artemis exclaims. “I shall talk about him all I want. But that’s not the matter at hand, the problem is that your ideas of romance are getting in the way of your competence as an able-bodied warrior. Focus, soldier! Get your head in the game, this is a battlefield you live on.”

Radric's lips tighten as his eyes narrowed, "Such trifles do not affect my skills in the battle. I am neither a child nor a fool."

Oh wow... that accent on his colors is just breathtaking. Coupled with the Summer Swelter, it looks awesome!
I scryed Radric to see what he looks like without his skin and apparel (out of curiosity), and even "naked" he looks great! The greener tinge of his head matches well with his skin.
Also, I love the itty bitty little spectacles on Radric's helmet. They're adorable.

Moving on to Radric's bio... Again, I love the art by CuQuoise. It's awesome!

"Winning her affections had become his new goal." Plot twist!?! I was not expecting this, and... suddenly it all makes sense!

"Lucifer never talked to him, not really. He all but ignored Radric's presence. Whenever Radric showed him how much he had improved, Lucifer would only glare before stomping away.

Not one to give up, Radric continued to do his best. He became a well-behaved, well-mannered, young gentleman whom most parents would envy to have raised. He read hundreds of books and scrolls to last him a lifetime and he trained hard to develop his own fighting style that should make any father proud, accomplishing such feats at the age of thirteen summers. "Left alone in a wasteland of disease, Radric panicked. He had stayed where he was, curled up into a ball, hoping that his father would return soon, but after a month of waiting, the young dragon tried to navigate his way back to their home." POOR BABY!

"The sight that greeted him was unbelievable. Paragon's sister, whom had died in his arms, was alive. She was giggling and playing with the other children, trying to catch fireflies. "It was then that Radric swore never to leave her side. He would always remember her even when no one would." MY HEART CAN'T TAKE THIS. YOU NEED TO STOP. JAHGKJFGHGJ

And finally, I noticed something... Radric's skin is called "Blooming Secrets", and his Ebony Filigree armor symbolizes a commitment to secrecy. Intentional or just a coincidence? Is there more to Radric than you're letting on?

History:

Despite how his father had treated him, Radric loved and respected him. So much so, that even when Lucifer had abandoned him in the care of his mother, Radric followed him of his own accord. Lucifer had snarled back at him trying to make him go away. Radric held firm.

But his sire would have none of it. Lucifer detested the mere sight of him for he was nothing like his brother. And he told him so. Confused, Radric asked more questions about this brother of his, causing Lucifer to growl out another warning, effectively putting a stop to Radric's inquiries.

Apparently, whoever this brother was, he had caused a great deal of hurt to his beloved father. And so, at a young age, Radric had disliked his unknown sibling. He promised himself that he would mend whatever damage his brother caused their father. He would make Lucifer proud. And maybe then, will the older dragon look at him with acceptance.

Lucifer had been on the receiving end of many of their clan's jibes and taunts. He was disgraced and had been deemed a failure. Many had sneered at him. For someone so arrogant to fall so low, it was indeed a sight. And the fact that it was his own son, who he had been so proud of, to cause him such grief, it was humorous. Radric tried his best to defend his father, but he, too was ostracized. Many called him a fool for following his father willingly, but he did not care.

He had vowed to prove them wrong -- that he was no fool, and that his father was and always will be great.

As the years passed, Radric resorted to educating himself whenever he had the chance. He and his father traveled more often than not in search of some things his sire required so such days were hard to come by. Whenever they returned home, his father would immediately lock himself up in his lab and many a time would he catch him nearly destroying it in a fit of rage.

Lucifer never talked to him, not really.

But his father still refused him praise, and still compared him to his brother.

Then one day, his sire approached him for the first time. Lucifer told him that they were to go on another trip across country. Radric didn't particularly care why, and was only focused on the fact that his father might actually, finally, acknowledge him.

But it was never the case.

Soon after they set out for the Plague lands, Lucifer instructed him to gather certain materials before nightfall. But when Radric returned, his father was nowhere to be found.

Left alone in a wasteland of disease, Radric panicked. He had stayed where he was, curled up into a ball, hoping that his father would return soon, but after a month of waiting, the young dragon tried to navigate his way back to their home.

He was relieved when he spotted the landmark of their clan territories, but as he drew nearer, he felt something was not right. He tried to brush it off and flew to his father's lab as he was most likely there, but he wasn't. Looking around, he noticed that, while the houses and possessions of their clan were still there, the dragons were gone...

Years later found him in the company of Paragon. He had met her during his quest to find his father. She had attempted to help him ward of a Wartoad, only to have him destroy it in haste, fearing that she might get hurt. He had given her a good scolding after. She didn't take it well. While their friendship began on rocky terms, he found that he actually enjoyed her company.

He had been alone ever since the disappearance of his father, and he felt no need to seek the company of others, but she was the only one who saw him as him -- not a disappointment, not a failure, just him. Which wasn't much, but it was a start. He had followed her and even went as far as to escort her back to her hometown, only to find that it had been under attack.

Being who he was, Radric couldn't help but lend a hand in fighting off the rogues. Then suddenly, there was a flash of white to his side. Looking over his shoulder, he saw his friend surrounded by dancing black fire, her eyes as pale as his wings. In an instant, she had disintegrated all her opponents.

He watched, still in awe, as she came back to reality, the flames receding to the tips of her claws.

When she had ran from her clan, he had tried to follow and growled at the elder that blocked his path. He resisted the urge to force his way through, because despite their hostile reaction to Paragon's power, they were still her clan and it would not do well to harm them. So instead, he busied himself with trying to save her sister, but there was nothing much he could do. His knowledge was useless without the necessary herbs.

When Paragon returned, he was awash with relief, immediately going to her side.

Her broken look when she learned of her sister's passing was heart-wrenching. Deep down, he envied such a bond between siblings, but he admired her and her family all the more for their filial piety towards each other.

When the clan had laid down their banishment, Radric took it upon himself to lead the family of three away from the others.

It hurt him that he could not do anything to help her more, but he knew that only time could help her heal.

The next day, he found her parents missing. When he had asked and she had brushed it off, Radric knew that something was wrong, but decided not to push her further. She had suggested that they travel to the Fire lands and he did not question her.

Later that day, they had reached an inn. While Paragon slept, Radric crept away in the dead of night. The disappearance of her parents and her attitude that morning still bothered him so he went back.

The sight that greeted him was unbelievable. Paragon's sister, whom had died in his arms, was alive. She was giggling and playing with the other children, trying to catch fireflies. Her parents were keeping watch over them from the top of the hill.

Shocked, he had landed and stared at the girl in disbelief, his huge form easily towering over her. Surely, he was seeing things!

It wasn't long before her parents came and pushed him aside. The mother hugged her to her side, while the father stood in front of them in defense. The picture was all too familiar to him for it was the same as when Paragon faced the wrath of her clan.

Radric asked them to explain, but the father bared his teeth and told him that he should be the one to explain. Confused and annoyed that nothing made sense, Radric was about to engage him, when Paragon appeared.

She had swiftly pushed him behind her and apologized to the older male for his rudeness. Radric was even more puzzled when the dragon he thought was her father snarled one final warning before leading his family of three back to their home.

When he had turned to look at Paragon again, she was glaring at him and he countered with his own, demanding that she explain what exactly happened -- why it looked as if her own family did not know who she was and why her sister was very much alive. Paragon simply narrowed her eyes and took flight, leaving him behind.

But Radric would have none of it and pursued her.

For the second time since their meeting, Paragon instigated a duel. If he could beat her she would tell him, and if she won, he would forget what he saw.

But as the fight wore on, Radric noticed how her eyes were brimming with tears and soon enough, she crashed into him and sobbed.

Despite being the obvious winner of their bet, he never brought up the topic again. Besides, he could already guess what had happened, the 'how' was still a mystery, but he could more or less understand what she had done.

It was then that Radric swore never to leave her side. He would always remember her even when no one would.

A man stood leaning against a wall, the ball of his palm resting on the hilt of his sword out of habit. He appeared to be staring at nothing in particular, but his gaze lifted slightly as he noticed a woman walking down the dim hallway toward him. His heart lifted and he smiled slightly, pulling his back from against the stones of the wall and drawing to his full height. “Good morning, Paragon!” He called to the woman as she approached, her long, dark hair glinting almost green in the bars of sunlight that fell along the floor and walls from the windows.

“Indeed it is a good morning, Radric! You look stern, as usual.” Paragon replied.

“Only doing my duty, madam.” Radric said, his eyes narrowing in amusement. Paragon reached him and he began to walk with her, close to her side, but not so close as to make her uncomfortable.

Paragon widened her eyes in mock surprise, “Was that a tease, Radric? I never thought I’d see the day when you’d make a joke. What happened? Is the sky falling? The ground crumbling around us?” At Radric’s hurt look, she shoved his shoulder softly. “I kid. You’re very humorous, Radric.”

Radric shook his head slightly, changing the subject. “I heard that someone’s coming to visit today, Paragon, any idea who it is?” The slender woman nodded in reply.

“A man by the name of Lucien? Apparently he’s incredibly handsome. I haven’t gotten all of the gossip, but from what I’ve heard he can kill a girl by smiling at her.” Despite Paragon’s light tone, Radric barely heard anything else after she said “Lucien.” That name. He had never wanted to hear it again, but he was coming. Why? Radric laughed, however, concealing his doubts. Perhaps it wasn’t his brother. Perhaps it was just another attractive man by the name of Lucien. But the nagging voice at the back of his mind pestered him. How many people have you heard of named Lucien? What are you going to do when you see him?

Radric pressed his lips firmly together, his eyebrows furrowing in thought. “I know that look, Radric. What are you thinking?” Paragon’s voice startled him out of his thoughts.

“Erm… Nothing. I just-” Radric stammered and broke off with a heavy sigh. “Nothing. Don’t worry about it. At least not until he arrives.” Paragon frowned at Radric, but didn’t press the issue, knowing Radric well enough not to poke at him.

When the two arrived at the front gates of the large house that Paragon owned, they stood in wait for the man called Lucien. After an hour and Radric’s legs had cramped up, they finally caught sight of him walking alone up the road. Well, mostly alone. Three or four girls and women trailed behind him at a semi-respectful distance, craning their necks for a better view of the dashing young man striding up the hill. And Radrics heart fell. Why? He screamed internally. He had travelled for the better part of a year to escape his brother’s shadow and here he came gallivanting up the road to meet Paragon, the woman he had been trying desperately to seek the attentions of. And Lucien had ruined it all. Radric knew the look in Paragon’s eyes. He’d seen it on countless love-struck girls when they met “the one.”

The man’s flaming red hair was tousled from the light breeze and he looked charming, in a wild, almost dangerous way. He was wearing a black travelling cloak and his sabre strapped to a loose belt that hung from his waist. “I’ve heard much about you, Lady Paragon, and I’m very intrigued by your band of mercenaries. I’ve come to inquire about joining you.” Lucien finished with a smile at Paragon and folded his arms neatly into his coat.

Paragon hesitated, glancing quickly at Radric before clearing her throat quietly and answering. “I would be glad to accept you as part of the Grigori, but you must prove your skills at combat.”

Lucien nodded once before replying. “Of course.” He turned to Radric, “And it’s good to see you again. Brother.”

Paragon busies herself with menial tasks around the lair; Lucien is off on a hunting trip, and honestly, it feels empty without him.

Not that she’d ever admit that to his smirking face.

As she polishes her rapier with a scrap of oiled fabric, a voice startles her from behind, making her drop her sword in surprise.

“R-Radric! Don’t sneak up on me like that!” she exclaims, turning around to face the silvery-blue Imperial. He eyes her with a searching gaze.

“Why are you doing menial work by yourself? You could have asked me to help, and I would have gladly done so.”

Paragon smiles, slightly abashed.

“Well, you looked busy and seemed to want alone time, so…” She cuts off her words with a shrug.

“My lady, you know I am never too busy to spare time for you. I am your bodyguard, after all.”

The way he says it makes Paragon want to shrink into a ball.

“That’s true…”

She sighs.

“Okay, come over here. I need some help fixing this part of the wall, and you’re a bit taller than I am. Can you reach that branch? It goes over there.” She gestures to a different sector of the lair with a clawed foreleg, and Radric nods stiffly.

“Yes, my lady.”

In the end, Paragon just gives instructions from her perch in the corner, and Radric is the one that carries them out.

She seems satisfied, however, so Radric is at peace. Whatever makes his lady pleased is something he will stop at no end to complete.

“Hey, thanks for all your help!” she calls, a toothy grin on her face. Radric bows.

“It is my duty.”

Paragon’s expression changes, and he wonders if he’s being too formal. Then-

“Lucien!”

Ah.

Heavy footsteps accompany a sarcastic voice, which can only belong to one dragon.

His…brother.

“Paragon, did you miss me? Even Radric’s here to greet me upon my return.”

No. Don’t give him the satisfaction he wants.

“I was here only to attend to my lady,” Radric replies with a bitter taste in his mouth.

Why must he always be overshadowed by his brother? It simply wasn’t fair.

“I will speak with you later,” the silvery Imperial says to Paragon, who nods confusedly.

He won’t be in Lucien’s presence any more than he needs to be.

No, he’s done with that.

"I would race you, but I wouldn't want you to get lost."

"As if." Radric snipped back, taking Paragon's right. Ice skating didn't seem like too bad of an idea, and if Lucien seemed willing, he was determined to seem even more excited about the idea. It was his motivation when they were all together, to seem better, to seem more willing, to keep Paragon safe. He would never forgive his brother for courting her out from under his wing, but his mind lay focused onto her. If he could not have her for a mate, he would make sure she was happy and safe regardless. He stretched his wings as well, overlapping them above Paragon's, and took a running start off the cliff they'd been perching on, taking to the skies. He was alone for a few moments, spinning over once or twice in the air, until he was joined by his brother and the love he'd lost.

[PART ONE -- Paragon]
[PART TWO -- Radric]
[PART THREE -- Grimoire]
[PART FOUR -- Lucien]

"Do you think that we could have a celebration for Lucien's birthday tomorrow?"

Radric stiffened. He looked up from the book his paw was resting on and, after some quick thinking, gave a smile that was actually more of a grimace. His heart flip-flopped when he looked at her pleading expression, emerald eyes catching the light outside his den just so, and sighed.

"Lucien's birthday was twelve days ago, Paragon. It's a little late."

"I know, but he would still enjoy it, don't you think?"

Lucien would adore any attention, especially from you, Radric thought, but nodded sullenly. "I suppose you are correct."

Paragon smiled, making Radric's heart turn over again, and poked her head a little farther into his den. "What should we do? What do you do for a birthday celebration? I hear about them but I've never been to one. I left my old clan before I was old enough to see one."

Radric pushed his spectacles farther up on his snout and shut his book, turning instead to locate a book about holidays and their history on his towering shelves. He pulled it down somewhat begrudgingly and began paging through it, searching for information about non-elemental celebrations. Finally he came to a short chapter on birthdays.

"Traditionally, a dragon's date of birth is celebrated with a breakfast of their favorite food, followed by a variety of activities with their closest friends and family. These activities vary depending on the age of the dragon, but may consist of seasonal festivities, grooming, or in some cases trips to the dragon's home clan, if they have left it... At the end of the birthday, the dragon often is given gifts by their friends and clan."

He closed the book with a snap. " Everything you might have already guessed," he said, succeeding at keeping the bitterness out of his voice. He had purposefully chosen a book that had strange and sometimes horrific accounts of ancient holidays, but it wasn't going to get him out of this now.

"We should invite Grimoire!" said Paragon. Radric resisted the urge to rip the book on his desk to shreds.

The wind whistled as four single leaves rode the breeze, flying by a single Imperial that watched them intently. After another minute of competitive leaf-staring, Paragon sighed. That was her life at the moment, wasn't it? She mused silently as the leaves continued swirling invisible patterns in the winter sky, oblivious to the inner conflict said Imperial was currently undergoing.
This moment at all was a rare occurrence: Paragon finally had some time to herself, without the three absolutely bothersome males constantly vying for her attention. After all, Radric was practically her shado-
A crinkling of leaves was all that announced the other dragon's entrance onto the scene, and Paragon inwardly sighed. Speak of the devil. Or rather, the dragon.
“Paragon! Where on earth have you been?!”
His tone was scolding, and the entirety of his tone simply annoyed her. It was the exact same tone that he had used when they first met, and from whence their friendship started. However, to this day, it never failed to annoy the dung out of her, and she couldn’t put a talon on why. Perhaps it was because of the nature of her personality, or maybe it was just because he was treating her as a hatchling; the inferior dragon of the two.
Okay, so when she thought about it the latter was obviously the correct choice, but reasons aside, it bugged her and he knew it.
A quiet cough alerted her that she had, in fact, been zoning out. It seemed that she did that a lot nowadays, but she supposed nothing could be done. Radric, however, thought otherwise. The worried look in his eyes said so, and Paragon inwardly winced at the lecture that was undoubtedly sure to come. Her savior, however, seemed to come at just the right time, as someone else stepped out of the wood and drew Radric’s attention away from the future scolding. His eyes lit with something that could only be called hope and a slight amount of smugness as he turned away from the intruder and back to her.
“Grimoire? Come here. I need your backing on a particular subject that has come to my attention as of late…” Paragon shrunk back as the two males closed in: one curious, and the other looking as if he was ready to give some dragon a stern talking to. It seemed as though some dragon was her.
Not good!
Her eyes glanced around wildly, looking for an escape route to avoid the oncoming emotional onslaught.
No escape.
Notgoodnotgoodnotgoodnotgood
Just as Radric’s mouth opened up to speak, and…?
Nothing. Nothing but pure, exhilarating wind on her scales. No speech, no probing of things better left unsaid and to herself. Just… clouds. And sky.
And Lucien.
Wait- what?!
Furiously glaring up at her savior, Paragon wished sorely that she was back with her other two friends.
Or maybe not. And what infuriated her the most about this particular situation was that Lucien knew this, and was taking every advantage of it that he could.
B*****d.
Cold, red, horrible, horribly handsome b*****d.
True, he wasn’t the breathtaking handsome that Grimoire possessed, but he was without a doubt good looking. Any dragoness with eyes and active hormones could say so, and she checked off both of those boxes quite well. Too well for her personal liking, as she suddenly realized the position they were currently in, and the scales around her face discolored ever-so slightly. Her breath came out in a growl, or at least that’s what she tried to make it seem like. To Lucien, it was probably more of a gasp, and this peeved her to no end: how he could make her feel the way she did. Damn him, this smug, cold-hearted, good-looking b*****d.
“PUT. ME. DOWN.”
“You know you don’t want me to do that.” His words were more of a purr then a growl, and it sent a shiver up her spine.
But…he was right. She didn’t want to be put down, and she inwardly cursed her body and mind for being so subservient to this callous demon. However, she would be lying to herself if she didn’t enjoy being in his embrace, or simply being around him at all. He filled some empty part of her made exclusively for him, and she wanted it no other way.
So, saying nothing more than an incoherent grumble, Paragon adjusted her wings and made herself comfortable in his grasp.
She could practically feel the smug grin on his dark features, yet she couldn’t stop a similar grin spreading across her own.
Somehow, she didn’t mind.

Elsewhere~

Radric’s expression was one of dark fury as he simmered on the overhang of that same cliff. He had been ditched by her, and taken by him. That no good, two-hearted, ***-sniffing-
“Radric.”
Said dragon blinked.
“What?”
“You were saying your thoughts aloud again.”
“Oh.”
He didn’t particularly care that Grimoire heard him- he already knew that he loathed his brother like no other. He had started off in a not-so-good mood as soon as Paragon started acting off again, but when that good-for-nothing abducted her, well, let’s just say that his day got a heck of a lot worse.
First he shows up, and then he takes his charge. Sometimes Radric just wanted to kill the older dragon, but he (grudgingly) admitted that the senior wyrm would whip his behind any day, and there would be nothing left but shadows. That was what you got when dealing with someone hand-trained by his father, after all. Stupid brother. Didn’t know what he had before it was gone.
During all this, Grimoire remained somewhat impassive, though a part of him was disappointed when Paragon left. He honestly loved the dragoness, and he always ached when she was away. But…there was something there-between her and Lucien. Something that she, the one who was renowned as the most oblivious dragon in the clan, felt. She herself felt it, and that counted for a lot. He knew his chances with her were slim, but he would persevere. For what it was worth, he would fight. The same could most definitely be said for Radric, but somehow Grimoire knew that if Paragon did in fact chose Lucien, which was the most likely occurrence, Radric would in no way take it lying down. Even now, he was in a sort of denial; blatantly ignoring all the signs that indicated that Paragon felt for Lucien. Grimoire had a feeling, a deep, gut-wrenching hunch that would never fail to pester his thoughts whenever he saw the other three together. He knew that this feud between brothers could and most likely would turn deadly, but he only hoped that Paragon would be left out of it. However, seeing the look in Radric’s eyes as Lucien quite literally swept her off her feet, he knew that she could quite possibly be at the very heart.

The winter had been particularly harsh. Paragon would know better than most as she had worked nearly all season long in efforts to provide and care for those of her clan. Days were growing longer, though, and when Paragon awoke she woke to the sight of sunshine filtering into her bedroom. It was a welcomed sight, and she eagerly looked through the nearby window to find most of the snow had melted away leaving patches of grass waiting to soak in the morning light. Paragon felt the same urge. The same desire to be out in the sunlight, and take in its warmth.

She turned in her bed to the sleeping form beside her. A poke was given to his side, and was met with a groan. Another, firmer, poke was given, and Lucien’s eyes opened to stare at her. “Let’s go,” she demanded.

Lucien groaned again, but sat up in the bed. “Where?” He also looked through the same window she had, but he didn’t seem too impressed with the melted snow or the welcoming sunlight. Paragon pushed him slightly, playfully, before rolling out of the bed.

“Outside.” She made it seem as if it was the obvious conclusion to draw. As she began dressing herself for the day, Lucien pulled the blanket over his head. She ignored him, continuing to pull on clothing, and with a frustrated sigh Lucien pushed the blanket away.

“Fine!” Even without her having to say anything, she knew she would get her way. Not much needed to be said for them to understand one another, and Lucien was well aware of just how hard she had worked through the past season. He joined her in getting dressed, and the two soon exited the room arm in arm.

As they made their way outdoors, Paragon caught sight of two more familiar figures. Radric and Grimoire sat at a table talking with one another. Their discussion petered out when Paragon headed in their direction, taking along a reluctant Lucien with her.
“You two should come outside with us,” she said.

“Why?” Both men asked. They shared a look with one another, eyes narrowed as if annoyed at having asked the same thing at the same time.

“I will join you, Paragon,” Radric added, pointedly ignoring his brother. He smoothly stood, and Lucien gave a grin that held more malice than mirth.

“Don’t trust me to look after her?” He asked. It was a comment that Radric also ignored, though a scowl broke across his features. He moved to Paragon’s other side, and Grimoire stood as well.

“The more the merrier,” he said. He took up the tail end of their little quartet, and Paragon led the way outdoors.

The sun hit upon them immediately upon stepping across the threshold of the door, and Paragon lifted her head slightly to welcome it. They walked in what Paragon perceived to be a comfortable silence, whereas the men walked in a tense silence in doing their best not to look at one another, but only at Paragon. After a few moments, though, even they could not deny that the sunlight felt good.

Paragon led them to a cluster of trees, where a few of them were showing signs of life. Small leaves, barely bigger than a fingernail, decorated their branches. She plucked four of the leaves from one of the lower hanging branches, and then turned to the trio with her.

The first leaf was presented to Lucien. He would always be first for her. He looked confused upon receiving the leaf, but bowed his head to her. “Thank you.”

The second leaf was given to Radric. He hesitated before accepting it, and, though he said nothing, his fingers closed almost reverentially around the green growth.

Finally, the third leaf was given to Grimoire. He took it with an easy going smile. “Thank you, my lady.” The words as easy going as his smile was.

Paragon nodded her head, and held her leaf upwards to catch the sun’s light. “To spring,” she said. Lucien and Grimoire held their leaves up as well, while Radric continued to clutch his, and the men repeated the words to complete the toast. Paragon was certain the troubles of winter were now well behind them.

Though the hour was late, Radric was very much awake. In the confines of his own room, where he had some privacy, he allowed himself to indulge a bit. A book on history had caught his eye before, and he had stolen it away into his room. Now, by the light of a few well-placed candles, he perused the pages with ill-concealed delight.

A knock sounding on the door caused Radric to jump. He immediately slipped the book beneath the cushion of the chair he was seated on as though whoever had knocked would be aware that he had been reading. Who could be here at this hour, and for what purpose could they possibly knocking at his door? After taking a moment to compose himself, Radric stood to find out the answers to such questions.

When he unlocked and opened the door, he was greeted by a beautiful sight. Paragon. She stood there still dressed from the day, and looking troubled. Radric felt his heart begin to beat faster at the sight of her. It was an unexpected visit, but one he more than welcomed. Even better, she was alone. “Paragon? What’s wrong?” He asked.

“May I come in?”

“Yes. Of course.” Radric took a step backwards to allow Paragon room, and she slipped inside past him. She turned to shut the door behind her, and took a few more steps inwards before looking back to him.

“It’s Lucien,” she began.

Despite his best efforts, Radric felt his features harden. “Lucien,” he repeated. Yes, it would be about Lucien. It always seemed to be about his brother.

“He’s been so distant lately,” Paragon continued, oblivious to his change in demeanor. “I try to talk to him, and he responds, but it’s as though he hasn’t really heard what I said.”

Radric returned to his chair, slowly lowering his frame onto it. “And you came to me… why?”

Paragon’s shoulders lifted in a shrug as though the answer should have been obvious. “You’re his brother. I thought you might have some idea as to why he’s been acting so strange.”

His lips twitched slightly in distaste. He wanted to please Paragon, to be able to help her, but not in something like this. If the topic were anything but his brother, he would have been more than happy to oblige to her wishes or offer any sort of assistance she might require. “I am not privy to my brother’s thoughts.”

“Surely you must have some kind of idea,” Paragon pressed. She folded her arms over her chest, and stared at Radric. Even so, he could tell she wasn’t really seeing him. Her thoughts were elsewhere. On Lucien, he was sure.

“I will give it some thought,” he replied, “and get back to you. It is late, Paragon, and I am tired.”

“Oh, yes! I had just seen the light coming from under your door, and thought I would try. Any help you can offer me would be greatly appreciated, Radric.” She smiled to him, a smile that made Radric nearly wish he had some answers to offer her on his brother. “Good night,” she said, and then turned to leave the room.

Radric jumped up from his chair to lock the door behind her. Coming back to the seat, he pulled the book free from beneath the cushions. For a long moment he stared at the cover before giving a sigh and dropping it onto the cushion. He had lost his desire to read. Blowing out the candles, Radric made his way for bed.
