Adviser to King of Embers, An-Kor. High chieftain of The Searing Council.

The dawn came and each passing moment was another way Rakesh’s heart broke into jagged, vicious pieces, poisoning his body. The letter he’s written, torn apart and revised hundreds of times sits neatly folded, affectionately written in one of the pockets of his robes that lay dashed to the floor all about his prince’s room. While the royal sleeps peacefully, ignorantly, beside him, Rakesh can only watch and go through agonizing loops of accepting his fate and needing to bury his sobs into the palm of his hand. His meeting with the king repeats in his mind countless times. If only he had the courage, the quick-thinking, the confidence—everything, he discovers, his prince possesses in excess. Yes, if only he were like the prince. Valiant, strong, overflowing with potential. A royal.

Normal.

Rakesh’s family from its very humble beginnings have always served royalty. It is fabled that Rakesh’s farthest grandfather served under the Arcanist as but a nameless scout. Whether or not such a lineage is a blessing or a curse is open to interpretation but presently, there is nothing beyond this that he can imagine being. His training was nothing if not thorough but also brief. He was assigned his first charge when he was only thirteen. This was unusual even for his clan’s efficient way of raising and teaching their offspring for servitude. His father sensed in him amazing potential and made sure he was sent away to his first charge as soon as possible.

That charge, was a prince in a neighboring clan. Seeing as Rakesh was so young, sending him lands and Flights away didn’t seem best in case his father’s intuition proved incorrect. The clan, or kingdom rather, was one that Rakesh’s family had long been allied with. Mainly because of the servants and advisers his clan had provided their larger, more wealthy comrades. Nonetheless, Rakesh was accepted openly.

This would be the last his family ever sees of their boy.

Quickly, he was thrown into the life of an adviser in training. Many told of how one day there would be a king to serve, a high-standing position next to a glorious throne, a golden ticket to luxury and legend. On the surface to a young man, this sounded like a dream come true.

That is, until he met Prince Kassal. Their introduction was brief and hardly formal. But there Rakesh learned that as soon as he was deemed ready, he would be at the prince’s side. Although a slight deviation from a king’s adviser, the tutor to a prince was not something to snuff at. And from that point on, Rakesh worked to gain the approval of his own teachers so that he may be of good use to the prince.

His being a student lasted years as he knew next to nothing of how to please a royal court or find suitable battle strategies between balancing economics and fair treatment to the citizens of his kingdom. Nevertheless, he was finally ready and, even though there were times where he and Prince Kassal were given times— however short, few and far between—to socialize and catch up on the happenings of their lives as they grew both in age and strength in their respective fields, the two young men grew quite close. In these visits, Rakesh learned that his charge was not a full-blooded prince and that his fate in this kingdom may be stomped out by the one of his entirely royal brother. Rakesh, in his taught and innate compassionate way told the prince that while they can be over-looked as separate entities, together they will be a force no one can deny. Bloodlines be damned. That, coupled with some fleeting, frightening intimacies between them, seemed to keep the fire in their hearts strong enough to push until they were both of age to no longer be considered students.

Rakesh was not given a graduation ceremony when he was dubbed an official adviser to the Court though Kassal made sure to make a small celebration between just two of them in his chambers. There were pastries and candles. And a kiss that both of them seemed to be pining for.

After that night, that blissful, ignorant night, life as a whole became a curse for them both.

Once out of the confines of his teachers and curriculum, the expanse of Rakesh’s abilities began to shine through. Not only could be determine the best course of action in a battle situation but he could also foresee the will and doings of the enemy. The first time he got a premonition, he passed it off simply as shallow prediction coming from the past behaviors of a certain general. But then, he became frantic at one meeting, repeating over and over that if Prince Kassal were to be sent to a certain battle, his battalion would be flanked and killed quickly and easily. Soon after he was thrown from the conference hall and into the closest empty jail cell on accusation of treason and being a spy for the enemy. For how else could he know with such certainty of the future? Despite the efforts of Rakesh, his teachers and even Prince Kassal himself, the king was too suspicious and ordered for Rakesh’s exile.

This news was delivered in the form of a letter once Rakesh was released from prison. Only he knew the news for days and in that time, he made sure no one learned of his fate. Each passing day was one closer to the date ordered to be his departure and in that time, he forced Kassal and him to spend more and more time together, asking for the prince to skip training days or meetings just so they can run off and be somewhere alone. Thankfully, Kassal didn’t seem to catch on and openly enjoyed his adviser’s company.

The night before he was told to leave, Rakesh wrote out a letter explaining everything, how he pleaded to not be sent away, how he tried to compromise, how he could be demoted to a stable boy if it meant he could stay in this castle. How he fell in love with his prince and how leaving him would kill him a thousand times. How he was sorry his own mind, what promised him his position beside Kassal forever became his own undoing. Deities, how he was infinitely, endlessly sorry. How he never meant anything like this to happen. How he only wanted to protect his charge. Rakesh vowed to slide the letter under Kassal’s door when he knows he’s asleep and leave at dawn. But as he stood before his prince’s door, the man he has grown to adore more than every speck of matter in the night sky, he cannot bring himself to passively wish his love adieu. He knocked on the door, Kassal answered. There was an immediate and heated kiss. The letter and the clothes that held it were left forgotten on Kassal’s floor.

And in the morning, Rakesh was gone, along with his letter and one of Kassal’s earrings. Gods, how selfish of him. How unbelievably vile and cruel.

A ship took him far away, to the abandoned and harsh lands of the Ashfall Waste. Here, Rakesh wandered until he both lost his faith and heard tell of An-Kor; a legendary leader who gave sanctuary for the broken and weary. His abilities were easily sensed by An-Kor and his sister who welcomed him, much like his old kingdom, but this time, they knew of his abilities, of his prophetic tendencies and how he was not a simple priest.

Once his mind was given true free reign to expand and blossom, Rakesh fell into a deep sleep as his conscious body and mind could not handle the changes the universe had in store. And when he awoke, everything from the way he walked to the temperature of his skin changed. His metamorphosis can only be explained by the temperamental grace of the Flamecaller. What was once a bound royal advisor is now an overpoweringly intelligent and capable chieftain to a collection of scholars and fortune-tellers.

Despite his new, liberating calling, there isn’t a single day Rakesh’s mind doesn’t drift to shy laughter, never too loud or disruptive. To passionate seafoam eyes. So soft sheets and even softer skin.

Rakesh has been given the opportunity to see into his own future, to see if he would ever be granted with Prince Kassal’s presence again but for his own sanity’s sake he leaves that answer to come whenever it wishes.
