"Why do so many tales end in tragedy?"

Born as beautiful and sweet as the flower he was named after, Sweetwilliam was competent at every task he tried and was revered for his abilities as much as for his kind nature. Gentle and generous, he inadvertently captured the heart of many dragons in his home clan, but he only returned the affections of one, who was delighted when he proposed and announced their engagement to the rest of the clan.

Later that night he was visited by an apparition of another of the clan's dragons who confessed her love for him. Distraught, for he had been fond of her in friendship if not romantically, he went to visit her the next day only to learn that she had killed herself - his late night visitor had been her ghost. His fiance left him, afraid of living with a haunted spouse.

Dismayed and confused by the senselessness of it all - why would anyone kill themselves over him, and why hadn't she tried to talk with him about her feelings while she was alive? - he recognized connections in this to old tales and traveled to the extensive library on the nearby island of Prufrock to study variations of folklore involving tragic love. The clan's exorcists were quick to place wards on him to prevent the ghost of the dragon who had loved him from coming into the clan's territory.

Though he thought he was done with romance, Sweetpea was sympathetic and patient with him as he recovered from the effects his previous relationships had had on him, and he soon found love again with her.

His friends Huck and Joad share his love of stories.
