Biography

The baubles sat there, tantalising her.
They shimmered and sparkled, begging her to pick them up.
No one had seen her enter.
Eyes wide, she picked them up, gentle as a mother.
She rolled them around in her hands, staring at the sparkles.

A snuffle and snort, a dragon rolled over in the darkness and resettled themself.
With regret, Fawn placed the baubles back on the shelf.
She was here for other reasons.

Creeping out of the house -
- wait -
Creeping out of the house for the second time, sneaking a bauble in her bag, Fawn had finished her job.
The payment had been collected for her boss....
And payment had been collected for her.

""What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine as well.""

━━━━━━━━━━━━ b i o ━━━━━━━━━━━━

Fawn is a daughter of Isavar and Oro, coatl biologists and nature lovers. Isavar is an insectologist, primarily focusing on butterflies- he often described them as jewels, and Fawn's youth was spent admiring the 'jewels' wings in their cases, and collecting shed 'jewels' from the forest floor, hoarding these in luxurious velvet cases that her father gave her, and this taught her a fascination for beautiful things. Oro, Fawn's mother, is a reputed and successful botanist, specialising in rarer and valuable types of plants and fungi. She would berate the young Fawn over treading on the wrong leaf or snapping off a rare orchid from its stem, or even just handling it wrong and bruising the fragile roots- and so between the two, Fawn learned to always treat softly, lightly, and handle things with extreme care. These skills in fact prepared her for a life as a thief, not that that was what anyone had intended.
Fawn also learned the intrinsic value of things, the value of these things to others, and the vast wealth of difference between the two. A pretty flower to one was a small fortune in alchemical reagents to another. She made a tidy profit, spotting rare things amongst the hauls of her gathering peers, haggling for them, and selling them at a vastly inflated price to the alchemists and botanists on market days. She put her treasure aside, though, and didn't share- just buried her hoards in secret places with special plants as markers- not rare ones, just unusual hybridised eight-petalled daisies, which would not stand out as unusual to anyone not used to counting petals.

━━━━━━━━━━━━ l o r e ━━━━━━━━━━━

Fawn was a headstrong and proud Coatl, from as far back as a hatchling; she refused to follow instructions, she would rather take the long route and make mistakes at a task rather than listen to other people's instructions and do it the easy way.
Eventually, the common acceptance of the superiority of her parents and other adults in her clan, begun to chafe- every time she saw someone follow what she considered an 'order', she would start an argument with the person giving and the person obeying, questioning their right to give an order and berating the obeyer's lack of gumption for sticking up for themselves.
It started as a novelty, this adorable coatl hatchling being so obstinate with her elders- then quickly grew tiresome, and eventually it was a huge irritation to the entire clan. Like a hatchling with a loose tooth, she couldn't help but seek out and prod at the more inflammatory of the clans folk, and her parents sadly knew that if she continued on this path, she'd get her head bitten off sooner or later. Finally, her laid-back parents decided an intervention was in order, and they tried- too little, too unreliably, too late- to bring down 'tough love' on the headstrong young Fawn. They tried taking away her favourite things, but she would find where they hid them- she would even steal from others in her hatchling grounds, saying if they wouldn't give her the toys, she would find them somewhere else. They tried locking her in her room, but she learned to pick the lock- and learned these skills so quickly and avidly, they begun to fear for her future.
Late one evening by the fireside, her parents discussed what to do about their wayward daughter, not knowing that she'd long since picked her lock on her window and was stealthily climbing on padded paws along the rooftops, to go out on a nighttime adventure.

""Did you see her, telling off that snapper?"" Her mother asked, wringing her hands fretfully. ""This afternoon? I thought he would surely bite her head off any second!""

""Or when she was telling that mirror that sharing her kills with the clan hoard was a sign of weakness? I mean, where does she get these ideas- not from my side of the family, that's for sure.""
The father's voice was tired, despairing, and it tore at Fawn's heart but also at her pride. Who was he, to criticise her? He who so amiably obeyed anything anyone asked of him! He was just spineless, that was it!

""Be that as it may,"" The mother's voice sounded sterner, ""She tore up my entire collection of Phalaenopsis this afternoon, in a fit of rage! Scattered them all over the forest! I've spent the last six hours tracking them down, and I still don't have them all back!""

""She broke every one of my gathering jars. Never said it was cruel before,""
Her father sounded sad. ""I never thought of it like that…""

""Don't encourage her!"" Fawn's mother snapped.
""Orchids don't have feelings! Dragons do! And what does she do with dragons? Steals from them! Steals from us, her family! She's- she's growing up like a criminal, Isavar! Can you imagine anything more shameful than a daughter who's a common Thief?!!""

The horrified words ringing in Fawn's ears, she raced back to her room in tears. She shredded the posters, her sheets, tore up the floors, in a fit of rage and pain. Through the tears, she gathered what she still had of any value, with hurried claws, in the last remaining bed sheet. She tied it closed, and climbed out her window for the last time, only lingering in the clan as long as it took to dig up her small treasures in the forest, not bothering to hide her tracks until she was outside the border and free, free from her parents and their expectations, free from her past- hoping it would stay there, forgotten, forever.

When Fawn ran away, it was then that she found out what hard luck really was. She nearly starved a few times, resorting to thieving scraps from fishermen's nets and market stalls to keep by; she was caught, imprisoned, and even flogged by the less law-abiding folk she fleeced for quick coin; but she did it out of desperation. She ran with a crew a short while, but hated the leaders and in a ferocious dispute over orders, finally ended up beaten half to death and left in an alleyway, starving hungry and weak with it. It was near then, when her Mistress found her. She nursed Fawn back to health, and more than that, back to strength she'd not had since her wilful childhood. She gave Fawn back her self-esteem, set firm rules for working for her, and expected Fawn to follow them without question. Fawn owed her life to her, and moreover had complete respect for her Mistress, and the feeling was mutual. Fawn worked for her willingly and diligently, and without the same rebellion she'd needed in her youth. She had finally found a place she was proud to call home, and that was The Tribe.
