While Asis spent his time burying his nose in dusty books and ancient tomes, Mark was far more interested in scientific experimentation and alchemy- knowledge that required action. Asis would seldom assist in these experiments, much preferring to keep his claws away from corrosive acids and unproven magics. Mark was one of the very few who could keep up with Asis and his one track mind for enlightenment, and for that Asis valued him very highly. For that, he turned a blind eye to the other scholars’ insistence that Mark’s research had gone down a dark path. He refused to believe that his dearest friend would ever do such awful things. Even when Mark returned from a long journey with a hatchling Asis had never seen in tow, Asis did not question him and quietly nursed a broken heart. But, he could not remain ignorant forever. Eventually, he began to see worrying signs from Mark, and it was getting further and further out of his control. Secretly, he read Mark’s most prized research journal and was horrified at what he found. Plans for the hatchling, and a horrifying, ancient arcane ritual. It was little more than torture, with only the slightest chance of success. And for what? A living, breathing weapon. Asis could no longer stand idly by. He confronted Mark, furious at how he would even consider such a horrific experiment on little more than a baby. Mark would not listen, claiming he did not understand his genius. He would not turn back. Asis was forced to act. Using his knowledge, he brewed a poison of the most potent quality, lethal from a single scratch, and coated his claws with it. Mark, however, had already begun the experiment when he arrived. He saw, horrified, how it pulled and twisted at the hatchling, gouging rune-like symbols into flesh. He wrathfully descended upon Mark and fought him bitterly, ignoring the aching pain in his heart as he did so. The fight took them outside, and though Mark was much bigger than he, Asis was prepared. A deep gash to his throat ended it quickly. He waited until Mark’s breathing ceased before allowing himself a single tear. When he went back inside the lab, the hatchling had collapsed. His breathing had ceased, and he was motionless. |

Asis first found himself talking about the most interesting theories he had heard of lately. He would travel to a certain lair to speak with their brightest individuals while Frost usually waited outside (for some reason, the poor imperial was seldom treated well among strangers). When he returned after a day or two, he would babble on about his newest insights. It only occurred to him after a long while that Frost wouldn't know anything about it at all. He never seemed to mind, though, gently encouraging him to continue. Asis was unfamiliar with kindness and generosity like this, and he discovered he was entirely defenseless against it. So, he spoke of everything on his mind, from his most recent breakthroughs (highly confidential to anyone else, of course) to his own thoughts and feelings about other things. Frost became irreplaceable to him in every way. Of course, it took a long while before he was willing to admit it to himself, and it took being in mortal to get the words past his fangs. It was only years later that everything came to a head. Who could have known that the breathless hatchling from a lifetime ago had somehow survived? Who could have guessed that he would return for vengeance not on the pseudo father who cared nothing for him, but for the dragon who had tried and failed to save him? The hatchling returned with a new identity as King, vowing vengeance on Asis and all that he loved. |
