Biography
Raylai the Spirit-Caller
Clan Fortune Teller, Clairvoyant, Creator of Surrogate Pearls, Sycomancer, and Summoner of the Shrouding Mists
Clan Fortune Teller, Clairvoyant, Creator of Surrogate Pearls, Sycomancer, and Summoner of the Shrouding Mists
"A crow flew to me, kept its distance--such a proud creation. I saw it's soul, envied it's pride, but needed nothing it had..." When her eyes meet yours, it is only for a fleeting moment. Never does she hold her gaze for long, instead peering at the strangely glowing pearl she clutches tightly to her at all times. She watches, constantly, an intense focus emanating that would be the envy of many. Many are unsure of this shy Pearlcatcher's origins, and Raylai has only revealed one thing: that her current form was not always so. Born a Snapper, many have become accustomed to watching her sleeplessly drift through the clan at all hours of the day. Her visage at night is especially exquisite, when she dons her ceremonial robes to sit by the moonlight and brush thick ink onto small pieces of paper she keeps close at hand. Readings for the morning, for clan-mates that she sees with eyes thankfully blessed by her deity. Some days, there are only a few--some days, there are dozens. They vary member to member, and are often words of encouragement--or perhaps a tip to increase luck for that day. "An owl came to me, old and wise--pierced right through my youth. I learned its ways, envied it's sense, but needed nothing it had..." Her reasoning to become what she has will be forever unknown to most, but a very dear promise to she herself. Previously shy to the point of hiding herself away in hermit-like fashion, it was a miracle (say many) that she had even appeared at all. But since her arrival into the Clan in the Mists, she has become far more sociable thanks to a Skydancer who simply wouldn't leave her to sit and stew by herself. Alchaeon has become everything to Raylai, giving deep purpose to an existence that she had questioned for quite some time. When their daughter Liana arrived, such second thoughts about herself were all but sealed off from her consciousness entirely. Her beautiful young daughter, her kind mate...yes, this was truly a life worth living. Becoming a Summoner was something that Raylai had never thought possible--but it was always worth trying. "A dove came to me, had no fear--it rested on my arm. I touched its calm, envied it's love, but needed nothing it had..." The path to becoming something so sacred was not an easy one, as the power of Wind was not naturally instilled in her. The force of Nature fought it endlessly, tangling about it like vines--but Lockwood's soothing words echoed often: wind travels where it pleases. Then, a breakthrough. Though her power is nothing like that of others, it does hold special purpose: the first healing Shrouding Mist, with capabilities to sooth the mind and body in ways that other methods could not. "A swan of white, she came to me--the lake mirrored her beauty sweet. I kissed her neck, adored her grace, but needed nothing she could give..." To this day, Raylai and Alchaeon (and recently, their beloved daughter) sit at the mouth of the lair in the morning: singing together to invite their clan-mates to wake and greet the morning. A voice once weak and soft now rings loudly for all to hear: "Don't give me love, don't give me faith--wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead. Don't give me love, I've had my share--beauty nor rest, give me truth instead."
