AREONE CHIAROSCURUS

The Reformed Bookkeeper

Areone is the Diabase Demesne's impromptu accountant, keeping track of financial records so the overworked Khozen can have time to attend his other tasks. He's easily embarrassed (and hates being teased), fond of puns, and flies poorly due to old injuries in his wings. Typical stuff, mostly, although how he came to Greatwyrm's Breach is far more unusual.

Areone spent his adolescence at the border of Shadow and Light, although he doesn't remember how he got there; he was too young. He hung around a large crime-ridden lair, and developed a knack for forgery and lockpicking, working alongside other crooks. It wasn't long before he was way in over his head, but whenever he tried to get out some of his old “friends” would find him and twist his arm until he came back.

One fateful day he met Beruka, who was on the run from clanmates who'd turned on her. He helped her find a safe place to stay, and the two remained friends afterwards. Whenever a job went badly- or his bosses had “persuaded” him to help them- he limped to her place. In spite of her reclusiveness and the dark rumors surrounding her, Areone found he trusted her more than most of the other dragons he knew.

His situation worsened when another criminal set arrived in town and challenged the established bosses. After a few months of rising tensions the conflict came to a head; both groups determined to settle their differences once and for all by force. Areone was one of many pressured into going to the fight, in spite of his total incompetence in battle.

When he got near the appointed place, he was spotted by one of the newcomers- none other than the bodyguard of the other gang's leader (who somewhat lacked in brawn). She observed that Areone wasn't a fighter, and warned him off; but Areone, out of fear of his bosses and loyalty to his few actual friends, tried to find a way past her anyway. When he didn't back off right away, she promptly beat him half to death.

Things went badly for his bosses in the battle; the few survivors scattered. Areone dragged himself to Beruka's door, and she decided it was time they left for good. They fled north, hiring a mercenary named Chiaroscuro for extra protection, and never looked back.
