His first moments of existence felt so strange, he would have sworn that it was a dream if he'd known what dreams were. Cypress's first memory was the sound of an explosion and the feeling of being crushed under someone heavy. The lights, the colors and sounds of the world were so unfamiliar, but he hadn't ever known anything else, either. He sprung fully formed from a cauldron of burning hot green goo, and scurried off into the forest before he was seen. There was another dragon, about his size and shaped like him, that the big guardian was standing over and harshly laughing at. His intuition told him to get away before he was seen.

For days, he wandered aimlessly through the jungle. It was hot and humid, but he didn't mind. It was his home, all he would have liked to change about it would have been to add some more water. He knew instinctively how to hunt, and which plants looked tasty. Eating and sleeping and doing very little else, he kicked off his life. He lurked outside areas where dragons congregated, and felt a profound loneliness.

He was sure they wouldn't like him if he went up to them, so he never did.

One day when he was resting underneath a giant cypress tree and eating a deer he'd caught, he felt a presence. It didn't take long for the dragon he sensed to crawl out of the bushes, and she looked starving. He didn't know what to say, but since she looked hungry, he ripped a flank off of his meal and nudged it towards her with his nose. She stopped coming towards him and looked confused, but eventually she stepped slowly forward to accept the meal, and sat down beside him. Her voice broken and rough, she spoke between bites.

"What is your name? I haven't ever met a dragon like... Well... Like I am now. So I want to know who you are. I'm Magnolia."

He didn't have a name, and didn't know how to speak, though he was able to understand her through some feat of magic. Instead of answering, he just pawed at the ground and shook his head gently.

Magnolia wasn't dull by any means, and realized that he must not be a natural born dragon, so he probably didn't have a name. "Ah, I see. It's ok, really, I wasn't like this before and most dragons like us are just... You know..." Her voice trailed off. "It's alright! I will name you. This tree, do you know what these are called? They're 'cypresses.' I'll call you that. 'Cypress.'"

Having a name for the first time felt wonderful, like being a real dragon at last. Cypress grinned and placed his tail across his new companion's back. He wasn't alone any more! It didn't take long, though, for the happiness on Magnolia's face to twist into fear.

"I don't know how long you've lived near here, but you must have seen her, right? The guardian- do you know what they are? A big dragon, brown and green with stones growing off her?" Cypress nodded, and Magnolia continued speaking. "I can't escape from her, she'd come after me. It's important for you to never meet her, do you understand? Don't let her see you!" Magnolia's voice was urgent, and she broke into a sob. "Once she gets you, she'll do anything to keep you with her. It's dangerous for you to speak to me, I understand if you want to stay away. I can't defy her."

Cypress nodded, but he didn't want to be alone again. He spoke, his first words: "I'll stay with you, I promise."
