Swift was not born in the conventional sense-- he began life as an enchanted wall painting deep within a tomb. His 'parents' simply painted and animated him with magic. Swift's purpose was to guard the tomb of a deceased Lightning clan leader. Much to his chagrin, Swift was limited to 'speaking' in hieroglyphs. His presence was primarily symbolic, as he could not do anything to potential intruders on the 3D plane. Swift paced his wall panel for eons, bored and lonely. The only company he had were scorpions and the mummified remains of the clan's leader.

But one day, the heavy stone block covering the entrance of the tomb moved. Sunlight streamed in for the first time in ages, blinding Swift as he ran across the walls for a better look. Dragons! Actual, real dragons! They looked much different than his 'parents' or the clan's other dragons, but that didn't matter to Swift. The dragons quickly noticed that one of the paintings was moving, and rushed to examine the panel. Swift rambled frantically, hieroglyphs flying out of his mouth before slowly disappearing into the ether. He hoped that they could understand him-- and lucky for him, hieroglyphics had been deciphered mere decades before. It took the researchers a bit before they realized Swift couldn't understand their draconic. Reduced to scribbling on parchment, they eventually communicated to him what their purpose was.

They were archeologists from a modern Lightning clan, and the tomb was found during a research dig.

Swift begged for the researchers to break his wall panel. He wanted to be released from his prison, to be allowed to rest permanently. But the researchers didn't want to let a talking piece of history go so easily. What else could Swift tell them about the past? Surely something about how dragons dressed, how they spoke, what burial rituals were like... No, they wouldn't let him go.

They formulated a plan. A necromancer lived in the sandy hills near the clan's lair. They contacted him and brought him to the tomb. Swift watched in confusion and horror as the necromancer began laying out old Wildclaw bones in front of the panel... along with assorted organs. As the necromancer began speaking, dark lines began to form into a ritual circle below the bones. An eerie purple glow filled the room.

And in the blink of an eye, Swift's perspective changed. Sent from 2D into 3D, the world spun around him as he drew his first breath. The archeologists seemed utterly thrilled that the necromancer managed to drag the consciousness and likeness of a painting into an old body. But Swift was far from pleased. He still couldn't understand what was being said, and now everything was so different it hurt.

Panicked, he lay on the stone floor, frozen with fear. Eventually he was dragged outside the tomb. He couldn't believe what he was seeing-- a vast and endless desert scorched by harsh lightning. He rested in one of the archeologist's tents as they asked him questions. He could not write, and they couldn't understand ancient Draconian. The researchers were in a worse place than before, as when Swift was on the wall they could read what he was saying.

The archeologists argued over what should be done, the necromancer just stood to the side. He seemed amused, clearly enjoying the fact he'd ruined their chances at learning historical secrets. Eventually, though, he left... but not before finally telling the archeologists something. Swift had no idea what, but a few hours later, one of the researchers emerged from the tomb carrying a panel from his wall. They placed it in the tent with him, and Swift found that he could return back to it if he so wished. In this form, he was able to answer the flurry of questions aimed at him.

Relieved, the archeologists gathered the information they needed. They offered Swift a place in their clan, and unsure of this new reality, he reluctantly agreed. Swift (and his wall) were brought to the lair. Everyone was curious about him, but some believed that such an unnatural creation would bring doom to the clan.

Swift stayed in his painting for quite some time, alone in his quarters. He hadn't wanted this, and he certainly didn't want to be stared at by others. He didn't know what they were saying, but the hushed tones and weird looks told him all he needed to know. During the night a few years later, Swift emerged and made his escape. With his wall panel tied to his back, Swift ran across the vast desert.

Eventually he found himself in Arcane territory. Terribly lost, Swift was eventually discovered by dragons from Clan Acamar. He eventually realized that they wanted him to follow the group. Terrified at what could happen if he refused, Swift complied. Once the clan's historian recognized what language Swift knew, a book on hieroglyphics was ordered. It allowed the clan to tell Swift that he wasn't a prisoner, that they were only offering him a home if he wanted it. Swift, having seen several dragons who were also 'oddballs', decided to stay with Clan Acamar. He's learned to write so that he can communicate outside his wall-- a necessary skill since he spends so much time in the real world now.
