Arian, since he was a hatchling, and by the nature of his clan flight(lightning), has always been dreadfully afraid of the dark. This lead him to later on take to ducking away indoors, surrounding himself with candles and lights, and burrowing in the brightest section of his clan.
It wasn't until he found himself in a shadow clan did he realize it was time to get over his childish fear and seek out a means to be free from the vexing phobia. It was around then that he found his growingly deep fascination with light and the creativity it could bring manifested by a fantastic skill for the forge.
Now often more than naught, he doesn't care if he's in the dark or not, he just knows the warm glow of the forge will keep him safe from whatever terrors lay waiting in the dark.
