The wind was warm and soft on Nona’s wings. She took a deep breath, clutching her pearl to her chest and feeling the updrafts push on her like a kite as she soared. The sun warmed her mane and all she could hear was the steady whoosh of it pushing through her fur, and her own heartbeat in her chest. She came to a stop only reluctantly, to forage for food among the warm, wind-whipped grass of the Reedcleft Ascent. Chewing thoughtfully on a sweet bamboo shoot, she looked happily over the landscape. Clans dotted the horizon here and there, and the sky was filled with brilliant balloons of all shapes and colors, with dragons flitting between them. The wind seemed to sing between the stalks of the reeds around her. With another great sigh, she flopped on her back to sun her belly, and watched the clouds roll by. Why had she ever been born an Ice dragon? She could never change the past, but… if she could have spent her whole life here, Nona thought, then all the better for it. She would never leave again. She had begun humming along to the ethereal tune of the wind when she heard footsteps in the grass and jumped, scrabbling to her feet. Another pearlcatcher was padding toward her. He chuckled at her gasp of surprise, and she curled her tail shyly around her feet.
He looked remarkably like herself, though she was quite sure she had never seen him before. He cut a proud figure, his pearl glimmering an otherworldly green and a crown matching his powerful wings resting on his head. A little gold chain swished across the grass as he walked, hanging from the silks on his tail. Nona almost wanted to turn and run, but she stood rooted to the spot until he was very close to her. “What impressive singing,” he said, and his voice was not deep or booming as she had expected; instead, it was a gentle baritone. He spoke only loud enough for her to hear him. She bowed her head in thanks at his compliment, tongue seemingly stuck in her throat, and he sat beside her, closing his eyes. His ears flicked this way and that as he listened to the music, and she allowed herself to relax a little bit, though she didn’t close her eyes in turn; she couldn’t help but take the opportunity to look at him while he wasn’t paying attention to her gaze. She jumped when he began to hum as she had been moments ago. Nona smiled.

It wasn’t very beautiful or skilled, but she could tell it was genuine. She stretched her neck and hummed along, their melodies intertwining with the wind’s and the musical buzzing of the insects and birds as dusk set in. Nona opened her eyes blissfully as she felt a cool breeze on her face. The other pearlcatcher still sat beside her, examining her thoughtfully. She turned her head bashfully. It had been well over an hour, she thought, and they had passed into silence some time ago, simply sitting and enjoying each other’s presence. “May I ask your name?” His voice caught her off guard again with its gentleness.
“Nona. I’m Nona.” His mouth quirked into a smile. “It suits you.” He made a little bow. “I’m Ilrahim.” “Ilrahim,” Nona repeated. His name seemed to roll off of her tongue with ease. He settled down on his front paws, resting his pearl at his side. “Have you a home here?” “No, actually. I’m a bit of a wanderer, really. Not that I mind it. I love exploring the Windswept Plateau.” “Lonely?” he asked, and she snapped her head up to look at him. She pawed nervously at the grass. “Well… I…” she trailed off, looking at the sun setting, casting trails of lavender across the horizon. Ilrahim shrugged, beating his wings once or twice to knock insects away. “Perhaps I shouldn’t have asked. I only wondered if you might… want a home. With me.” Nona stared. “I mean, with my clan. I’m a warrior there, and we… we…” His voice died as Nona began to laugh. She laughed so hard that she fell onto her back, kicking her legs, and tears streamed down her cheeks. Ilrahim looked on, ears flattened in embarrassment, until she regained herself and rolled up to her feet again. Still chuckling, she wandered over to him and sat next to him, resting her head against his shoulder. “I think I could stand that—going home. With you.” - The day their first hatchlings were born, Ilrahim gifted Nona with a set of chimes to wear across her wings. He said that they suited her, and she could sing to them as she flew from place to place. Nona gave Ilrahim a golden banner she had woven with the help of the apparel keeper in her new clan. The two often reminisced about the day they had met, and on particularly warm evenings, they would fly back to the Reedcleft Ascent together to sit among the reeds and hum the old melodies they had fallen in love through.
