Biography

Even as a hatchling, Lapis knew she was different. She hatched out of an egg slightly larger than the others and absorbed an exorbitant amount of the nest’s energy, her parents only producing two eggs. When she hatched, her mother, Lazuli, was thrilled to have hatched a pearlcatcher. The odds had finally favored her with a pearlcatcher daughter, and she pampered and adored Lapis above her other mirror children. The others in the clan, however, saw Lapis as a shy, ill child who did nothing but gaze into her pearl all the time. Eventually, one of the other members of the clan convinced Lazuli that it was time for her to take Lapis to a healer to see if there was anything wrong with the reclusive hatchling. Reluctantly, Lazuli took her favorite daughter on the long flight to the Beacon of the Radiant Eye to try to gain an audience from the Lightweaver. Moved Lazuli’s distress, the Lightweaver agreed to examine Lapis, but could not find a single possible malady that could be the cause of the hatchling’s obsession in any of the scrolls in her massive library. She then recommended that Lazuli take Lapis to the Arcanist, for she recognized that the obsession certainly was not natural. With a heavy heart, Lazuli began the journey to the Observatory in the hopes that the Arcanist might possibly be able to find the answer to her daughter’s problem. The Arcanist, intrigued by the Lightweaver’s failure, examined the hatchling and searched through his tomes to try to find an answer. Finally, in one of his oldest books, he found a mention of a lightning dragon whose parents nested slightly too close to the Sea of a Thousand Currents and who absorbed just enough water energy to act mystifyingly different. Lazuli, scared by the thought of the idea that her daughter could be incurable, rushed Lapis to the den of the Tidelord deep within the Spiral Keep. The Tidelord, indeed seeing the mark of his magic upon the child, explained to her mother that Lapis would indeed have a few of the mystical powers usually observed in Water dragons. He then suggested that the child leave the Shifting Expanse, as the constant exposure to high amounts of natural electricity would scramble the child’s mind. It was with extreme sorrow that Lazuli then bid farwell to her still hatchling daughter and left her to find a new home where she could be safe.

It was in this fashion that Lapis found her home on the Windswept Plateau. She has built herself a tower of the strongest bamboo and seldom leaves. She devotes herself solely to her pearl and often glimpses pieces of the future. Only her trusted familiar Morpheus, a dreameater, can stand to be in her intense aura for extended periods of time. The clan hatchlings fear the strange old dragon, but many of the clan’s dragons will come to her to learn what her pearl has foretold for their futures.
