Indicted into the temple of the Earthshaker as a hatchling,
Xen has lived a long, quiet life studying inside of its thick stone walls, safe from the dangers of the desert outside. The Earthen worshippers had been the first to settle the area, and had raised Xen as a devout follower of their practices-- however, as the bustling desert town grew from a single inn, a stop for weary merchants taking a shortcut through the treacherous lands, so too did his curiosity for the world outside.

While his studies demanded the majority of his time, Xen had learned, with time, to manipulate and persuade the older dragons in the temple to allow him to run errands, going as far as hiding the donations they'd been left as offerings so that the shortage of supplies would compel them to let him go. The outside world was terrifyingly beautiful, full of strange smells, loud noises, and busy streets, with vendors yelling over each other and potential customers pushing him aside to examine their wares. The last time he had been outside he'd been only allowed as far as several steps down from the entrance to the temple before a sharp voice had halted him in his footsteps and drawn him, however reluctantly, back inside.

His first taste of the brilliant, colorful world outside had been intoxicating, enough to distract him from his studies as he daydreamed and stared at the dusty rays of sunlight passing through the windows. More and more he'd managed to test the limits of his allowance, to venture further and further into the heart of the city-- until the day came that the temple's elder called upon him for something that he felt would both satiate the young dragon's apparent thirst for adventure, and satisfy an inevitable part of his spiritual journey to become ever closer to the Earthshaker himself.
It was a pilgrimage-- with no apparent destination, a chosen wandering outside the safety of the city in the massive, shifting wastes of the desert.

"It will be dangerous, child." Were the words of warning given to him, but his heart beat wildly in his chest and he nodded, unable to turn down such an opportunity. He had a week to prepare emotionally and spiritually, meditating to strengthen his resolve and solidify his goals for the journey. It was intended to be difficult-- after all, their practice was set in a foundation of stone,
and venturing into the shifting wastes challenged every aspect of it, including his very survival.
He'd known only one dragon to be allowed to take on the pilgrimage before, and he remembered waiting days perched in the sill of one of the temple's massive windows, waiting anxiously for her return. She did, eventually, and lived on to be the one standing before him now with his supplies in hand, which she set before him and bowed, the rest of the temple's keepers standing and watching as he accepted his gift.

"Thank you." He murmured, ducking his head in respect, and the elder woman chuckled, neck craning down so she could press her forehead to his. "Safe travels, my child, return to us when you have found what you are looking for."
