tidal the hiker

As a young boy, Tidal climbed mountains and explored caves with his parents. They taught him how to read the ice, how to use his tools to, not only be safe, but to reach the peak of the mountain. It was a happy life. Climbing with his parents, exploring the ice. The joy was not to last. At an early age, his parents decided to climb their last mountain: the mountain where the Icewarden rested. They wanted Tidal to join them, so they could be a family while serving their patron god, but Tidal didn't want to leave. His dream was to go to the Earth lands and try to climb the mountains and the Pillar. To go to the Wind lands and scale their cliffs. Then to Fire to try his hand at a volcano. Even water where he wished to climb the outside of the Spiral Keep. Every land had a challenge for him. There was just so much to do. With a heavy heart, he said good bye to his parents, then to his clan, and left. His first trip took him to the land of the Arcanist. Tidal spent months wandering around their mountains, climbing up anything and everything so he could see what the world had to offer. It was a peaceful life, but it was lonely. Without his parents to join his climbs, like they had done in the past, Tidal was beginning to feel the sting of being completely, utterly alone.

Despite the sadness of his travels, Tidal did not stop. He continued with his dream. He climbed every mountain, every volcano, anything and everything that was a challenge. As time passed, his heart became as hard as the stones he dug into with his tools. He was still a soft and loving dragon, gentle with others, but his heart had hardened to hide the pain of his parents. He knew they were still alive, serving the Icewarden, but the fact that he could not join them hurt. More years passed while he mulled over his thoughts, and Tidal became a mountain climbing instructor. He taught the younger generations how to properly climb. Even though most of the younger dragons had the skills to fly, Tidal stressed the importance of being able to climb without wings. In the event of an emergency, not even the ability to fly would save someone. As a Snapper without the Wind element, he knew this all too well. The fear of an avalanche or a rock slide was always at the back of his mind. Without the ability to fly, he could easily die. Crushed by the very mountains he loved. Yet the fear did not stifle his feelings for adventure.

Until he grew older. Climbing mountains was proving to be a challenge. His wrist and ankles ached with every twist, his body creaked and groaned with ever climb. Hiking was much easier than climbing now. Tidal had to retire as a mountain climbing instructor. He bought a lot of supplies, then went on a very, very long hike. He moved from his old home in Earth, where he was a teacher, to other lands. He marched silently, one foot after the other. He climbed smaller mountains and followed old, abandoned Snapper trails, until he found himself at the foot of the Shadowbinder's forest. He kept walking, and walking. The thoughts of returning home to the Southern Icefield, and scaling one last mountain to see his parents. They had always written to each other, but recently their letters had stopped coming. Perhaps age finally took them, like one day it would take Tidal. The desire to return back to his former home was soon forgotten, however, when he came across a clan. Oddly, he was welcomed with open arms and given a place to rest and recharge after his tiring hike. Tidal took their hospitality to heart, and chose to stay. The coven agreed. Tidal was harmless enough. Nothing more than a humble hiker. Now, many more years have passed, and Tidal has become one of the clan elders. He continues to hike day after day, but he always returns with trinkets and treasures from his hikes for the little ones. Every night, he is willing to spread his wisdom to those who seek it. Yes, it is a good, humble life. A life where, for once, he doesn't feel as alone.
